I have been looking at pics and such of Sebenzas with Devin Thomas Damascus. I have a mnandi that has DT SS Damascus and I absolutely love the steel. The DT SS Damascus does not stain, no corrosion of any kind, it as tough as nails, holds an excellent edge, and I would highly recommend it for anyone that can afford it and will always give it :thumbup:. I was looking at some sebenzas and I see they are HC ( High Contrast ) Damascus. First I thought it meant High Carbon Damascus, but later found it to be High Contrast Damascus. My Question Is: I would like to know the difference between the two as far as stain resistance, edge holding, toughness, etc. I know what the DT SS offers and my experience with it. I would like to know your thoughts on how the HC Damascus compares to the SS Damascus ???

Wish I could answer your question Tom, I have 1 mnanda with DT HC ladder pattern but its a safe queen. I have owned over 50 DT blades but they have all been safe queens or letter openers. I like the stainless way better than the carbon steel because of the no rust problem. Heather at CRK told me that all there damascus blades now have a protective coating applied to them to help prevent stains & tarnishing.

I seem to remember something about the protective coating. I know from my experience what you get with the SS DT Damascus. I wish I knew how much different the HC ( High Contrast ) DT Damascus was. I sent Devin Thomas an email, maybe he can shed some light on the main differances.

I would like to have just a plain large regular sebenza with a SS DT Damascus blade with double thumb lugs. I like all the damascus patterns, so anyone would do. That way, it has the tough as nails ss damascus with just a plain regular handle. I think that would be cool.............and cheaper:D

I post sone Pix in the AM, Iv used both... and that coating is NOT made for use. :)

That rub mark in the coating on the Micarta classic was from one cardboard box, I'll poke around some more to see if I can find a better pix

This is the only other pic I can find, I must of never uploaded the pix to photobucket :o
(You can kind of see the rub mark near the shoulder of the grind line)

Anyways here is Raindrop HC and SS, I like SS MUCH better for a user

Mostly because you can use it and it does not show, cardboard boxes and all... she will keep that new unused look.

I emailed Devin Thomas about the differences between the HC and SS Damascus, Here is his response:

"The HC is made with 0-1 and nickle. It is a carbon steel and prone to rusting. Hope that helps.
Devin"

They are both beautiful quality steels ( remember before Devin spoiled us with Stainless Damascus, the Carbon Damascus was all we had ). So for a user, Stainless Damascus is definately the way to go. I wanna get a large sebbie, hopefully regular profile and use it. I have enough safe queens.

:o

I'm glad I snagged a uncoated stainless one, because honestly that gunkote stuff marks up easy. The non coated stainless is the heat, I wonder why Chris would want to coat them all?
