With winter and Christmas coming up I've decided to treat myself to a nice wool sweater. I'm looking for info primarily on fit, warmth and durability. Does anyone have any experience with Devold and/or Filson sweaters? Thanks!

No experience but Filson's has a great reputation.
It is funny with all the synthetics used today the sheep have held out. Nothing replaces quality wool.

I have a Filson wool vest about 20 years old and its held up great. Still looks good enough for semi-dressy occasions. My 35 year old Filson cruiser coat is still good to go. For a couple years I tried the synthetic fleece thing, but got my wool stuff out of mothballs last year. No more fake stuff for me, its wool all the way from now on. At my age it seems like I feel the cold more than I used to, and the poly-fleece stuff just does not cut it. I also swear by wool lined gloves, and my wool watch cap. I also use the wool socks from Cabelas.

The only disadvantage I can think of is that with wool, you have to have it dry cleaned once in a while. No big deal. It can be brushed pretty good, and soiled spots can be cleaned with cool water/woolite. For off season storage use a cloths bag to hang it in the closet with ceder chips or mothballs. Its worth the bother.

I own a lot of Filson including a really nice sweater. Had it for several years and it is awesome. It retains it shape, is warm (obviously) and stylish. Low maintenance and care.

It is a darker color so stains and spots aren't much of an issue. That is always a consideration for me when spending a lot of $$ on clothing.

Filson seems to be looking like a good bet but I'm still intrigued by Devold. Apparently Devold made sweaters for Norwegian explorers for turn of the century polar expeditions. Interestingly enough, one of the sweaters worn by one of the more famous explorers is on display in a Norwegian museum  .

I have a Filson wool vest and a stag shirt. They are both wonderful garments but if I had to buy them at today's price I would pass them by. Filson price are out of line especially since much of their line is made overseas. I also have a Woolrich wool jacket that I really like and it came at a fraction of the price of Filson. I'm looking at a McAlister field jacket now.
