I’m looking into buying a deware. What size should I be looking into? I plan on building anything from choppers to skinners. When I look into the 10 liter sizes, i can only find a mouth diameter of 1.97 inches max. I would imagine I would need at least 2.5 inches. I didn’t see a depth on these. What would everyone recommend? I’m looking on eBay. Thanks

You may have to get up to at least 20 liters in order to find the wide mouth models.

your finding the same thing i did a few years ago no 10l with 3 inch mouth i got a 20l with 3.5 inch mouth its great but gasses off the LN jsut as fast as a 10l so you need to plan your HT jobs

The other piece of bad news is that like other gear that we like, it seems to be a bit harder to find big dewars for cheap on eBay, etc compared to say 5 or more years ago when there were still a lot of shops closing down or cutting back because of the economy and getting rid of equipment.

Yes you have to go bigger to get a big mouth.

If you search for dewar instead of deware, you will find more.

If you try to buy used, try government lab disposal sales, Used Lab equipment dealers, insemination companies.

also search for "used bull semen dewar"

The companies seem to buy new and sell off the old.

If you build an insulated box, you can prolong the loss by a few days.

If you are only needing smaller amounts, get a well insulated 10L dewar with a small mouth. Build or buy a cryo flask. It is a tall well insulated cylinder to pour the LN into for use. A 16" long piece of 3" pipe welded to a 8" circular base will make the cylinder. Cut 8" discs of 2" styrofoam to slide on the cylinder. leave the top 2" free of insulation. Duct tape the whole mess up to keep it tight. Pour the LN in as deep as is needed when you are ready to do the cryo. When done, pour the remnant back into the dewar using a wide funnel.

This may be something I’ll try. Makes good sense. Thanks everyone else for the replies.

A LN cryo flask big enough for a knife HT costs a bunch unless you get lucky on ebay. This one costs anywhere between $0 and $30 to make. I would use stainless just for the heck of it .... and use a very good weld. I saw one made from an old multi roll film developing tank that was about 12-14" long and 3-4" round. It was wrapped with several inches of some sort of insulation (inswool?) on the sides and bottom and taped up with duct tape. They found the tank at a flea market for $1.00.

Here, I found a tank like it on ebay:

It actually sounds really easy to build. I’ll start looking for materials ASAP, and probably order a cheaper 10l dewar off eBay. Not sure if I can find stainless pipe around here very easily. But I’m guessing regular pipe would work ok?

If advertised as a 2” mouth, it’ll fit 1 7/8”, or 1.9” depending on how you measure.
