Ok guys, I finally hit 1000 posts and as most of you know decided this week to go orange and offer my services to the community.

I would like to give back to this awesome forum as I have won a couple of giveaways myself.

Giveaway 1:

First off Will be a Fire Giveaway Open to Everyone, Beckerheads and non-Beckerheads. Must have had at least a few posts in the Becker Sub forum at the time of this post tho. Not sure exactly what the prize will be But I can guarantee that it will be awesome and made by me. So basically some sort of fire kit similar to the one I carry myself I am guessing.

Rules are you must post a new picture or pictures of you making a fire, Using your Becker knife of course. Preferably using more primitive methods than a lighter and a can of gasoline. Can't be a fire you made last week, has to be from today till The end of the contest, Im thinking a week or 2 weeks? So get outside and light it up.

Picking the winner: Depending on how many participate, I might do a random number selector or maybe vote on the best method of fire making or coolest picture. Maybe even do a poll and have the Becker community vote on the best entry? Not sure yet but I want it to be fair.

Giveaway 2:

Next is only for Current Beckerheads! Meaning you have to be a Beckerhead at the time of this post. Sorry........But that's what I feel is fair.

I am going to give away a handmade leather BK-11 sheath very similar to the design I have been using for over two years now. I have posted pics of my first pro-to type before. If I get a chance I will Take a new picture of it and post here. That is the first design I am going to make to offer you guys and I thought It would be cool to give away one of the first one's I make for sale. Might even give the winner choice of Brown or Black.

To enter this contest, Please post post your Beckerhead # and a picture or pictures of you making something with one of your Becker knives. Preferably outdoors but backyard, garage, or inside will work too. Get creative and have fun doing it.

Picking the winner: Depending on how many participate, I might do a random number selector or maybe vote on the best creation or use of the knife. Maybe even do a poll and have the Becker community vote on the best entry? Not sure yet but I want it to be fair.

And don't worry if you do not have a BK-11. If you win the sheath, I will give you a new BK-11 and Micarta Scales.

I think that's about it. If you win the sheath and are under 18, I will need to talk to your legal guardian before shipping you the knife.

I reserve the right to change the rules as I see fit. As I get more details I will post them here.

Also, If you are a Beckerhead, please feel free to enter both giveaways if you want to.

Thank All of you on this forum, and thank you Ethan Becker for making this forum such a cool place to hang out at, learn things, and share experiences.

I was practicing flint and steel this afternoon. I was going to post this in the "what did you do with your Becker today" thread, but I guess I will post them here. This was my first flint and steel fire ever. Next I would like to move onto charred punk wood and natural birds nests.

Here is what I used. My BK-14 with a Northeastkydex1 (trailbum) sheath. Esee steel striker. A piece of quartz and flint, Charred cloth and jute twine.

Made a birds nest out of the jute twine.

Using the quartz with the charred cloth on top I messed around to see what it took to throw sparks up onto the charred cloth.

I got a spark or two to land and create an ember on the charred cloth.

With the charred cloth placed into the birds nest I started to blow on the charred cloth to ignite the birds nest.

The jute twine lit up really quick and I threw it onto a pile of wood shavings. I actually missed and I had to use my BK-14 to push the burning birdsnest onto the pile of shavings.

FIRE!

Part 2

For the making something part of the contest I chose to make a deadfall trap. This trap was new to me and was on the list to learn. I also wanted to teach anyone on here who is interested in learning rather than just posting the completed trap. This trap takes parts of the figure 4 deadfall and the Paiute deadfall. What it lacks is the frustration of balancing all the pieces and mostly removes wind setting the trap off or knocking it over by using a live tree for the main support.

Here are the parts. One large log for the weight, one pinkie sized stick for the toggle, the arm length support stick, and the thumb sized part to pound into the ground to loop the cordage over for the trigger. For this setup I used 550 cord but any decoy line or mason twine should work for this since it doesn't take a lot of tensile strength to hold the weight up. I also used my modded BK-10 or the Big Becker Bushcrafter (thanks Trade).

Take the thumb sized stick and sharpen both ends. One end sharp to the driven into the ground. The other and needs to be rounded and smooth.

Drive the stick into the ground next to the tree rounded side up. Make sure the tree you choose is fairly small and straight with no branches or obstructions to slow the fall of the deadfall.

Next take the arm length support stick and tie a section of 550 cord to it at about 2/3 of the length. Use a Canadian jam knot.

Next tie the tag end to the tree making sure the when the stick hangs it does not touch the ground.

Tie another length of 550 cord to the other end of the support stick. The loop the long end of the 550 cord around the base of the tree. Here it is holding the weight of the deadfall.

Figure out were the stick needs to sit to hold the weight securely and measure to find were you tie on the toggle. Tie the 550 cord with 2/3 of it sticking out for more leverage. You can support to weight with your knee by holding the support stick down so you can use both hands to tie the toggle in place. Set the toggle like this.

Next remove the guts of some 550 cord and use a few strands for the bait line.

The leftover piece I used was too short so I had to tie 4 stands together.

Make a loop in one end like this. Do not make a slip knot.

Tie the bait line to the very end of the toggle and loop the loop over the stick you drove into the ground. While driving the stick into place it may have mushroomed over. Take the time to shave the tip down smooth again. While shaving the stick put the loop all the way to the ground so it does not slip off and set the trap off.

Here it is all set up with another log tied to the first one for more weight.

A close up of the trap with the loop in place. Set it so that it takes very little for the loop to slip off of the stake. Bait the bait line by either threading some sort of bait onto the line or spreading the bait onto the line. The animal will either tug the line off of the stake or bite through the line springing the trap.

Video of the trap in action.

Thinking about the trap longer I tried to make a more sensitive trigger. I took a forked stick and cut off one of the forks leaving about 2 inches of it. I drove the stick into the ground with the hook facing down. I removed the bark and thinned the tip so the loop can slide off easier.

Lay some sticks or a piece of bark on top of the bait line making a treadle. Bait the bark or stick above the bait line. This way all the animal has to do is walk onto the treadle to spring the trap.

Here is a video of the trigger variation.

No stuffed bunnies were harmed in the making of this trap.

Cool giveaway Dex!

If for some reason I am randomly picked by the number generator please run it again so someone else can win. I just wanted to post these pictures somewhere for you guys.

Awesome pics Jeremy!!! Flint and steel is one of the coolest ways to start fire! I have been thinking of picking up that ESEE steel since I've really only used the back of a BK-16 and a piece of rock I found in my yard to practice. Kind of dangerous but effective.

And charred punk wood works great too! I usually make birds nest from cedar bark since we have so many cedars where I live.

Thanks again for sharing here and great job on that fire!

So, I guess lighting a garage creeper on fire (underneath me) with the plasma cutter is out.
.....place mat.....
I also surmise that the oxyacetylene torch and its striker would also make for a DQ. :)

Ok, I tried my ancient piece of flint stone (again), which was not successful (again). So, I settled for a fire steel and dryer lint. Makes me feel like Tom Hanks' character talking to Wilson, "I ... have made fire!"

Inebriated bushcrafting at it's best. I knew I was doing something wrong.

Maybe next time you can show us a medicinal plant.... lol

Dex, congratz again on your new endeavours, and congratulations on the 1000 posts as well!
I thought I'd just take you along on my day, using a BK14. Hope that there's something in there that allows me to qualify. BH#282...

Somewhere this morning, I decided to start sorting through some of my fossiliferous residue... Residue? Well yeah, that's the stuff that's still on my mesh after I sieve the matrix (clay and gravel) with water. It's mostly gravel, but also fossils... This stuff is Turonian (Cretaceous) in age and it's what remained on the mesh with a 5mm mesh width (I sieve my matrix down to 0.8mm, so this is the larger stuff). Couldn't find my tweezers anywhere, so while I was sorting through the stuff with my 14 I decided I could take some pics of it as well for this contest.

Found a partial tooth...

Another, as well as a partial fin spine...

A good one! Cretalamna appendiculata

Have you ever seen a Becker and fossilized shark turds (a.k.a. coprolites) in one picture? Now you have. They're not uncommon.
20140421_110604.jpg

At noon I was getting a bit hungry and thirsty. The new package of Ice Tea was unopened. Tearing the plastic is not so nice, and the 14 makes it a lot more easy as well.

20140421_113417.jpg

Of course it can cut shrimp too...
20140421_113712.jpg

The day before yesterday I got myself a new tool, of which I absolutely wouldn't know the name in English. Even in Dutch we have several names for it, and all the ones I know seem to be some kind of local dialect and I can't find the proper name for it. Anyway, the metal blade didn't ride high enough on the wood, so I thinned it down a bit with the 14 and cleaned it up with some sandpaper.
20140421_150815.jpg

Works like a charm now.
20140421_151743.jpg

Later on the evening, we were going to have marinated ribs. Something I really love to eat is rhubarb, so that's what I had to get and clean up a bit before cooking.
20140421_152132.jpg

Get the stem out of the ground, and cut the leaves off!
20140421_152301.jpg

After the massacre...
20140421_152612.jpg

...the booty!
20140421_152626.jpg

Peeling them is really easy when they're fresh and right outta the ground. Just put the edge underneath the skin...
20140421_160117.jpg

...and pull away.
20140421_160133.jpg

The acid of the rhubarb works rather quickly on the 1095. It's getting dark already.
20140421_160832.jpg

Time to cut it into pieces.
20140421_160935.jpg

Done!
20140421_162106.jpg

Pretty dark now... but that'll wear off again.
20140421_162351.jpg

And then, dinner was served.
20140421_170118.jpg

So, what exactly did I make. Well, I made it easier for me to go through that fossileferous residue since I couldn't find my tweezers. I made the plastic package of the Ice Tea go bye-bye and made the shrimp into bitesized chunks for my mouth.
I made the wooden handle on that gardening tool a bit thinner so the blade would fit the handle properly.
Furthermore, I made dinner by cutting the rhubarb that I needed from the plant, peeling it and cutting it into pieces before cooking it. And lastly, I made myself enjoy my day by playing with my BK14 all day long.

Thanks for the chance, Dex!

Cheers,

G-shark, BH#282

Garlic, Oregano, or Dandelion? :D

Also Great pics G-shark.

And I call that tool a hoe

Beckerhead #352 I'm in for a chance Dex!

After watching WW's video I was tying to think of a way to get both challenges done at the same time. My materials included a BK2, a Cedar board, some fatwood, my Primus fire starter, sand paper, and my cell phone for pictures.
WP_001140_zpsb1116bea.jpg

Decided since the morning was so beautiful outside that I would let the kids play in the yard while I sat down and played with my knife.
WP_001141_zps49d03a07.jpg

Started poking away at the Cedar board with the 2.
WP_001143_zps418c293f.jpg

Call me lazy but I went with a + over the ampersand. I then started to carve out the letters.
WP_001144_zps15fda834.jpg

All carved out
WP_001147_zps2bf3861a.jpg
4
Made me some little fluff sticks with the Fatwood
WP_001148_zpsce6a6421.jpg

Used the feather sticks and the shavings from cutting out the letters to make my fire. Then ignited with my fire steel
WP_001149_zps389c780f.jpg

WP_001151_zps05bd16d5.jpg

I then used the fire to char the top layer of the Ceder board
WP_001153_zps67542fe6.jpg

After putting out the fire and cleaning up a bit I put the kids down for a nap and began removing the top layer of char.
WP_001154_zpsbcf6b404.jpg

After I brushed it all off and split the bottom of the board so it would sit nicely against my sanding block for a photo op.
WP_001155_zpsa9e6c4f1.jpg

So I made a nice little wooden sign carved with nothing buy my BK2. Then I made a fire using a fire steel.

Congrats again Dex for going Orange and hitting 1k posts. Thanks for the chance at this awesome give away!
