I inadvertently caught it. I was looking for the disease. It found me.

Recently, I found out, a year or more after the fact, that Schrade went under. Having grown up with Old Timers and Uncle Henrys, I went out of my way to track down some of the US-made Schrades. Bought a couple on eBay, a few more from a closing hardware store.

Suddenly, I have 5 stockmans. In the Old Timers, I have an 8OT and a strange hybrid "parts knife" that Schrade put together as they were shutting it down. In the Uncle Henrys, I have an 834UH, 885UH, and an 897UH.

So I start playing with the 885UH. Same knife my grandaddy used to carry. In fact, I own his old one, sheetrock dust still on the blades.

I realized I really like the bigger stockman knives. (And here's where the devil whispered in my ear, where the contagion began.) Wouldn't it be nice to get some of the nicer 4" stockman knives and carry them, compare them, enjoy their different qualities? Wouldn't that be fun?

So now I find myself compiling a list of large Stockman knives I'd like to own.

Moore Maker 2301 in Carbon (just bid on one on eBay)
Case 6.5 Bonestag in CV steel
Boker smooth red bone in Carbon
Boker Grand Canyon series in Carbon
Queen Cattle King in D2
Eye Brand Stag in Hammer/Forged Carbon
Cold Steel in Carbon V

Already, as you can see, it's gotten ugly. The disease is rapidly spreading across knife brands and internet sites.

Is there any treatment? Better yet, do you have any better suggestions? :D

Your 'disease' sounds quite managable. I have "Neat Design Knife Disease", "Beautiful Knife Handle Disease", "On Sale Knife Disease", and several other ailments that have no known cure.

If you see one, you might also like the Old Timer 89 OT. It's like the Senior Stockman 8OT, but with a serrated blade.

As the saying goes, "the disease only gets worse."

The only solution? Buy 'em all.

You don't have a problem until you start spending the grocery and the rent money on knives.

I've recently been infected with a strain of this one myself, "majorus stockus" I've been obsessed with the Jumbo 4 inch+ Stockman pattern.

don't fight it, just roll with it, it is uncurable, I have 50 to 70 stockmans alone, I gave up fighting the "stockman fever" a few years ago and buy what I need to get my "fix".:D

50 to 70???

Suddenly, I don't feel quite so bad about my madcap shopping binge the past couple of days. 5 new stockman knives on the way.

Will give a report on them when they arrive.

I have been bitten by the CASE #18 bug. I have one in my pocket, one in my knife cabinet and I'm watching two on e-bay.

Why not throw in a U.S made Buck 301 just for fun? I know a guy who has that and a 303 Cadet and they seem like decent user knives for the money.

I only have 13 Schrade stockmen.

Edited to include my newest one (courtesy of a fine gentleman over at the Schrade forum), which wasn't in the original picture.

Don Luis, nice collection. I picked up an old large serpentine Schrade stockman at a flee market for 10.00, the main blade had been sharpened down to about 60% left, but it sure is a great user.

if you like the schrades, and you'd like the large stockmans, hunt yurself up a big ol' 858 OT. they are big! I persoanlly think they are big and clutsy, but everyone has different views. pictured is some of my stockmans, the handiest knife there is , I think.

From top to bottom:
schrade 108OT
schrade walden 863
schrade walden 80T
schrade 340T
schrade 340T
schrade 340T
schrade 340T (I like the 34OT's can ya tell?)
western 658
Case 1975 (can't read pattern number)

I've only got three stockmen (stockmans?), but next to the Buck 110, it's my favorite pattern. I'm always on the lookout for more.

I have periodic flare-ups of this particular ailment, it's in remission at the moment.:)

You think Stockman's disease is bad, try punch blade stockman's disease.

A fat punchblade cattleman in stag or buffalo horn can get me to look away from a naked woman.

hmmm. The only thing I know to do , is stop looking on ebay and throw away your catalogs and stay on the net and do not go near knife stores, or knives!

No Crap, man. Also, you can throw away all ideas of getting an inexpensive punch stockman or cattleman. However, I love them just the same.

Same here. But, there's a local knife only show this coming weekend, with LOTS of slipjoints available, so I'll more than likely come home with yet another stockman or whittler. Stag, of course. :)

Afficionados of the punch stockman: What do you find yourselves using the punch for?

Pics taken when I was in stage 1 of this disease...

I am now in stage 3, in which I need at least 1 new (or old) stockman per day. It's not pretty on Sundays (no mail)...

Just follow the pretty colors:D
