I've been interested in the Battlestation knife since I first saw the sneak peek pics a while back. But now that it's been released, I can't help wondering why it's priced quite so high. Not sure if there are some features that I'm overlooking, but it certainly doesn't seem like a ~$200 knife. Any thoughts guys?

I actually just got the Spyderco 2014 Catalog & Price List I requested off their site like 3 days ago, in the price guide it lists the Battlestation MSRP as $319.95.

Isn't this a VG-10 backlock with G10 scales?

Seems a bit steep based on the fact that the Southard has premium steel, Ti framelock, bearing flipper for just over $200 street, or the Domino that is comparable to the southard for under $200.

If the battle station is indeed in the upper 100's, I believe it is a little overpriced for what you get. Of course, this is probably not the "real" price you will end up paying, and it will probably settle in to a reasonable price after supply catches up with demand.

One website had it listed around 185.
Personally I won't buy one at that price point. I'd much rather spend around the same give or take and have the ZT 562 cf or the Rubicon or the Cubby

I have to agree. I thought the price was a bit high. I'd buy it if the price was around $125 but $200 for a larger Native type knife is a bit much. I still love Spyderco but I think they're moving part of their line into the semi-custom range. Not necessarily a bad thing and their fit and finish can certainly compete, but IMHO this strategy doesn't fit this knife.

Especially since it's not bigger than the Native, functionally.

I feel your pain. Many of these collabs price themselves out of my interest with so many ridiculous values in Spyderco's lineup. I know they're not overpriced, as the quality is definitely there and the designs are unique, but I've passed recently on the Ulize, Lava, and Hungarian all because they were more expensive than things like the Manix XL, PM2, and new FRN Manix. I know I shouldn't be judging a knife by how much material is used, but I just find it hard to pay 50% more for the Lava than the superb Manix XL or PM2. Or looking at it the other way, the Lava is only $50 away from the Southard. I've decided I'll only pony up for those collabs that really speak to me. Cough cough Slysz Bowie cough...

I would guess that the price comes from the extra time machining such a complex grind (And some of the extra machining on the G10 scales...both the side cutouts and the rounded part in the aft of the finger choil). I did buy one, and I'm definitely impressed with it. Super robust tip...probably stronger than the tip on any of my Spydercos just based on the geometry, and it really is a looker in person. I won't be selling it because I love the ergos and the grind is exquisite, but yeah it's not a cheap knife. I paid a little less than $200 for each of the ones I bought (Bought one for a friend as well to save him shipping and customs).

Looks great. You should send it my way to pimp ;) lol

It doesn't seem extraordinary. Japanese models are always more expensive for the material/fit/finish, and being a collab always adds more onto the price.

Plus given the unique nature of the knife I doubt they expect it to be a runaway hit and sell in mass like a PM2 would so as to be able to expect to make back all the initial costs over a lot of sold knives.

I was certainly debating that...got any ideas of how to do a rough facsimile of the machining on the sides of the scales and the small cutouts in the aft part of the choil? Without them there would definitely be hot spots, but with them it's VERY comfortable in hand.

I had a suspicion that you'd have an idea of what to make of it...there's a very good chance you'll see it first instead of my Ulize or Lava. The Lava for sure is on my list for custom scales, and maybe the Ulize...still on the fence with that one regarding custom scales.

I think the Battlestation, then the Lava, then the Ulize.

I have new stuff coming that will be incredible I think.

I only wish Spyderco would give us like a 3 month window of when these new knives are coming so we could all save accordlingly. I know not all of us need to...but some of us do. lol

I put a few extra weekend days in so I could buy this Battlestation...and a Vallotton, which is awesome but it doesn't need custom scales.

I've been on the fence about getting the vallatton. Worth it? Should I get one? Lol I mean in a perfect world I'd just get one of everything Spyderco makes ;)

DEFINITELY get a Vallotton. The grind on it is awesome, the blade is 4mm stock and is the full thickness almost to the tip, it's SUPER beefy and yet the polished G10 is very classy looking, and the ergonomics are excellent.

I think a number of the Japan-made Spyderco are uncompetitive in pricing. I'm definitely not talking about the value-priced Delica, Endura or Stretch. The Caly 3.5 is a great deal too. But then you have models like the Starmate, Centofante Memory, Battlestation, Khalsa, etc.
Anyway, it is what it is. I vote with my wallet.
