Sal, can the old diamond sleeves be used on the new sharpmaker? Or are the stones different enough that they cant be used.

Cobalt - They should work OK. But we havn't produced them for some time and they might be dificult to find. We're working on our new Diamond solution. Could be used to replace the coarse gray stones (some people see them as brown). Still in development stages though.

Has anyone looked for a way to prop up
a bench stone at the appropriate angle.
This would let me use my coarse DMT stone
to do the initial grinding.

Allanm - back in the late 70's, we used to cut a "V" knotch out of a 2 x 6, small moulding on each side would nest 2 bench stones in a preset "V" angle. A little well in the bottom of the "V" held the oil (or water for diamond stones). The tip of the knife was used to move oil to the top of the stone which dripped back into the well. This permitted Sharpmaker type of motion on the bench stone of your choice.

Allan,

I've been using my coarse and x-coarse DMT hones with the Sharpmaker. I just prop the hone up against the ceramic triangle sticks and hold it there. It works just fine, and I get my initial cutting done really fast.

I use my DMT hones strictly dry -- no water. They cut fast and easy, and has the advantage of not making a mess when propped up against the Sharpmaker.

There's an old article of mine entitled "How to Make the Sharpmaker Perform" on knifeforums.com Knife Reviews Forum. It's relatively near the top of the forum, probably no less than 10 days old. Don't use the automatic search feature (it fails), just zip straight to the forum and look for it by eye.

Thanks for all of your responses.

Joe, thanks for the idea of using the triangle stone as a guide for my benchstone. I am a little concerned about the strength of the triangle stone but will give this a try.

Also thanks for the excellent sharpening FAQ. You might want to include a warning for people like me that get a little over excited about getting a good edge. I guess I will have to wear long sleeves until some of the hair grows back

When I need to reprofile an edge, I clamp my big 'ol Norton stone in my bench vise. I use a little cardboard wedge that approximates the angle of the Sharpmaker stones to set the angle.

Hop up on a milk crate for better leverage, and get to work! That's all there is to it.

I did not know the diamond sleeves were discontinued. Will there be a sleeve or real coarse rod available for the new Shapemaker?

Copfish,

Sal stated somewere else that they are working on a new diamond setup for the sharpmaker.

Greg --

Putting your stone in a vise, I don't know why I never thought of that. I have one of those all-position knifemaker's vise's in my garage -- it spins and rotates into any position or angle. I could mount the stone in that, or even choose my own angle. What a great idea, can't wait to try it!
