Sal,

I was talking with one of our fellow forumites who is also a knife-monger (and he shall remain nameless in case this question causes you any grief[G]); he said that he had heard you guys are working on diamond sleeves for the 204, for heavy metal removal of a FUBAR edge.

Any truth to that?

Steve

If you can find a set from a 203 they fit the 204... I kept the sleeves from mine and donated the 203 to the local Boy Scout Camp.

Sal,

I, too, would love to see these again. I wasn't around when the old ones were available, but I sure would like to get a set!

Steve, you beat me to it. I was about to start this thread and here you are.

Sal, I remember (vaguely) a post from a few months ago where you said that you were working on a replacement for the diamond sleeves. I don't recall whether you said that they would be new sleeves or diamond impregnated stones/rods.

Whichever, these things need to be moved up on the priority list.

I've had many inquirys about diamond sleeves since the 204MF came out. It seems that, with the new angle, something more agressive is needed if one wants to double bevel or change the angle on a blade made of quality steel, especially something like BG-42 or CPM440/420V. Aparently, it just takes too long to wear down the steel with the ceramics for some people.

How about it? Will we see these things in the near future or shall I start working on having something manufactured myself?

Seriously, I have had a LOT of inquirys about them lately. It would be nice to be able to give a better answer than a blank stare and a shrug. People are starting to think I'm still in the Navy.

Thanks.

We're still workin' on 'em. Tougher to do then originaly thought. We looking for more than we had with the previous sleeves. Haven't gotten there yet. Haven't moved them on the priority list. Just found out yesterday that we cannot do something that we thought we could do. New tack.

In the meantime, I've been having great luck leaning a 6"x2" DMT x-coarse stone against the 15-degree sticks for the initial profiling. It cuts very fast and at the exact same angle as the sticks, but more awkward of course than having real diamond sleeves.

There you go! Just bore out two triangular holes on each end of the DMT base and voila...diamond sleeves

I will certainly keep you updated.

Joe, Longdens suggestion is not too far out. A 1/2" dovetail slot in the plastic part of the benchstone does the same thing.

Sal I am not familiar with the diamond sleeves you offered in the past. I do have some 5/16" diameter DMT sleeves made for regular round ceramic stick base. They are an improvement but I don't think they are as good as the regular DMT "benchstones". They seem to wear faster. Perhaps you just need the regular type DMT diamond impregnated substrate laminated on one to a triangular piece, that fits your plastic base. Diamond cuts so fast, this would be good for most plain blades without recurve. Just an idea.

What was wrong with the old sleeves?

I have the chance to get a pair, so it would be nice to know if I should ge them...

MDP, I have a set of sleeves that i have been using for about 10 years. When I bought them the salesman at the Del Mar Fair, here in San Diego, told me to keep them wet with water as I used them and they would last longer. He was right. They still work and I have used them extensively for everything from recutting the angle on my old Buck 110's edge to putting an edge on a Cold Steel Master Hunter that was sold without being ground. They work.

As far as I'm concerned there isn't a anything wrong with them and would recommend that you get them if you can.

Good luck.

P.S. I got a set as a spare a few years ago for when these wore out. Haven't had to use them yet. Looks like I might have a lifetime supply.

Joe, EZ Lap Or DMT (I don't remember which) sells diamond "shim stock". One could always get some of that, cut it to size and glue it to a spare set of triangle stones.

It comes in several different grits so one could make one set of stones with 3 cutting rates.

I'll check my catalogs when I get to the shop and find out about suppliers, price, availability, etc., if anyone is interested.

Dennis,

I got them. I am also looking at creating a diamond attachment for the Sharpmaker and the Edge Pro, I have been conversing with a 3M rep. I decided to go with 3M after I heard a rumour that an acquaintance of Cliff, I think, compared the DMT to the 3M, and found the 3M better.

The 3M rep has been really nice, in fact she sent me some free stuff, cool.

Dennis --

Very interested in finding out about shim stock! I have extra stones from my spyderco 203. I could epoxy the shim stock onto those.

Thanks in advance

Joe

Dennis,

I echo Joe's request; keep us advised what you discover. I have a 203 gathering dust now; it would be nice to get some more use out of it...

Steve

Dennis,

I recently sourced a set of diamond sleeves for my well used 203. I really appreciate the hint about using them wet

Geez guys. Are these sleeves an underground sort of thing?

Where does anyone find stuff like this? it's not like they routinely show up anywhere is it?

This hot and hard to get, they must be close to illegal
