The plastic is fine. More acid resistant than the nickel, probably.

Oxalic acid is particularly reactive to iron and the oxides of iron, but much less so, with many other materials. One thing to notice, the BKF powder comes in a container with an aluminum cap on the can. It doesn't seem to react with that at all (though the included abrasives will remove swarf from the aluminum, when scrubbed). The liquid form of the product comes in a plastic bottle; again with no issues. That's not to say oxalic acid isn't potentially dangerous (reading about it's use at full undiluted strength will open one's eyes), but it's not so bad in the BKF mix. As I'd mentioned earlier, even BKF's recipe is fairly dilute; and it's still plenty to get the job done.
