Hello,

My name is Olga Smith, and I am a new member of the Blade forums as well as of the Bodycote team in Greensboro.

We would like to update you about our DiamondBLACK Tungsten DLC coatings. As you know, these coatings offer unique engineering properties to be used in any area of relative motion between components. The low C.O.F., relative high hardness compared to steel, and E-modulus similar to steel contribute to high fatigue resistance, high abrasive wear resistance, low heat generation, and no cold welding in the situation of poor lubrication conditions.

For your convenience, we created a Data Sheet, that includes the essential information (i.e. Hardness, Deposition Temperature, Color) about these coatings.

Unfortunately, they did not let me attach a .pdf file to this post, due to security reasons.
But I will be happy to email this Data Sheet to you, if you are interested.

Please feel free to contact me.

Umm, Olga, advertsiing here is not allowed. Second, this is the custom forum, not a place for discussion of factory Anything. And three, your post is going to go bye bye as soon as the mods see it.

Have a good day.

Para, I dont see this as advertizing, there has been so many questions asked about these coating by makers and users they are trying to put together INFORMATION.

That being said maybe this should be moved to the Reviews and Testing, or Shop Talk forum. :)

Para, custom makers use BodyCote's services as well....not just the factory guys. This kind of information here would benefit those makers who frequent this particular forum who might be considering using blade coatings.

Welcome to the forums, Olga :)

Yea, Para, us makers use them, and I didn't see it as advertising.

Hiya Olga, welcome aboard. I spent alot of time talking with Darrel L. at the Guild Show. Learned quite a bit about the new coating and am anxious to give it a try.

Olga,
I am probably the number one fan of bodycote around here. I love the coatings and have sent a number of knives to NC to get coated. Nice to see you here. E-mail me if you have any questions.

Olga, I for one, would like to see some more specific informaton on coatings as it relates to knife making. Possibly you could post some example pic's with a brief benefit analysis paragraph?

After reading several posts regarding boron carbide and DLC coatings, it would seem to me that applying either of these coatings to a mirror polished blade would result in a mirror finish that is (virtually) scratch proof? Is this correct, and does anyone have experience with this? Cause this sounds like what I (and many others) have been craving for for a long time, useable mirror finished blades! (other than the black coloring...)

Hi Olga and welcome,

I have a question about the coating. Can it be applied to surfaces that are not smooth or has slight depressions in it ? I would like to know basically if someone could have a heavily etched damascus steel blade coated? And how hard would the coating be to remove from the surface of the steel after coating to produce a good contrast between the highs and lows? If any makers know please chime in.

Mark
