Diamonds are man best friends

Buy some float glass. Lee Valley sells 8.5" x 14" x 1/4" sheets of it for $11USD plus s/h and even sell clear mylar sheets and SiC powder to use with the glass for flattening chisels and waterstones. Don't know about chisels, but I've used lapping film on it to flatten waterstones.
 
I agree that film on glass is much more stable, noticably so.

At first blush, looks to me like the diamond is applied to a ceramic. That makes sense.
