This is not me, but one of my knifeknut friends' story. He has got an HI 15" AK through me from Uncle Bill, brought it to Tokyo to showoff his (and my) friends a week ago. The AK was of course beautifully made, heft and tough as supposed for every HI khukuri, and had served him quite well for months.

I was not at the place with my 20" AK, which I had allready showed off to ALL of the guys a month ago... he told me all the comments on his khukuri were contrary to his expectations.
"Skinny khuk!","It's featherweight"...

He was disappointed by no awe but much more amused by the thought what kind of knife could make them (including a knife dealer) totally lose their sense of size.

Big Khukuris - they DO make a lasting impression

WrongFriend, it truly is amazing how khuks can distort our sense of proportion. There was a time when I considered a 15" knife to be large. Now, having owned a few khuks, I considser a 15 incher to be on the small side.

I agree totally guys - I use to think a 15" AK was big until I saw a 20" khukuri.

IMHO - u need at least 3 or them: light model for camping, mid weight for the car/emergencies, and a monster for HD work!
The 18"+ Sher looks like it is in the MONSTER category even though it isn't as long as some.

Uncle Bill - what is the longest and heaviest khukuri HI carries anyway? I am not sure. Just curious.....LOL.

A Randall #1 Fighting Knife with an 8" blade at around 13" oal is typically considered by the run-of-the-mill knife knut to be "absolutely humongous", and what Mick "Crocodile" Dundee would call "... now that's a knife".

An HI Sirupati with an 8 1/2" blade and around 12 1/2" oal is typically considered by khukaholics to be "... just the cutest little thing...".

Be nice and don't give the Bowie bearers an inferiority complex by using medium or larger khuks around them. And for God's sake don't tell them HI makes a Bowie or they'll go catatonic!

The sword of Charlemagne the Just is ferric oxide, known as rust. Great Caesar's bust is on the shelf, and I don't feel so well myself.

Ya, I can see a picture in Blade or Knives Illustrated - you know, the reader submitted pic with their favorite knives - holding up a HI Bowie and a 21" AK - caption :

--- And this submission by Rusty aka 'Ferric Oxide', shows him with his bird and trout Bowie interpretation by Himalayan Imports, along with his trusty camp knife. "I never leave home without 'em!", says Rusty. We might add, Rusty wears thick belts and suspenders. ---

Sorry Nick, but I don't yet have a 20" AK. I do have a 5/8ths thick Super Salyan, though, that Cliff thinks may beat out the AK as his favorite.

Oh, good. I thought this was going to be some guy saying that his AK was a poor performer or something. Well, as I've posted before, there ARE some khukuris available for sale in Japan, like advertised in the Japanese Blade magazine. The usual size is about 18 inches long, and is the same as the crappy "Indian government contractor" khukuris for sale in American catalogs, just three times the price. Rough blade, and poor fitting handle with cracks all over. A 15 inch AK is much better, but smaller. One company in Japan sells 27 inch khukuris, and even khukuris over four feet long. Those go for about $575. Maybe these guys are Japanese sword afficionados, so size does not faze them. In museums, I've seen nodachi swords in perfect condition about ten feet long.
