OK, some of y'all are on the right track with the pattern..

Perhaps I should give up a hint here:

Remember now, Dick Proenneke was in the Alaska wilderness and shooting his now famous film starting in the spring of 1968. He made pretty damn near everything including the handles for many of his hand tools right down to the wooden hinges and latches for his hand made log cabin door.. Put yourself in his shoes at that time and keep in mind that his trusty and well used pocket knife must have been produced prior to his trip into Alaska... And thats my hint thus far for everyone.

Ok, I going to keep at this...

Schrade Old Timer Gunstock Trapper 1940T ???

Funny thing is, I have the DVD and the book One Man's Wilderness and it doesn't seem to be helping very much. :o

I have the book & it shows a pic of a case middle size stockman, with the oval case emblem, sticking in a log. A search through the book & I could not find another pic or a discription of his pocket knife. thats all I have. good luck all !!!!!!

Case Medium Stockman, Pattern 18. Not sure of the model number since Case has so many variations.

You all are closing in PDQ starting with Tim and everyone there after who guessed the Stockman pattern, but no cigar as of yet??

In that picture it looks to me like one of the larger Case Stockmans either the 6347 or 6375. That's it for me. I'm out of guesses. This contest has been a great one.
Thank you for the opportunity SunnyD.

Thats it bald-tacoII, however that particular camera shot has distorted the bottom bolster of this Stockman. There are a good deal more shots of this knife. A few more are somewhat distorted as well but several are quite clear and could perhaps assist you guys in the actual model number.. Keep guessing. :)

Sure looks like a red bone Case Stockman to me, but I already guessed wrong. :(

Cool contest!
