Did anyone notice that the first run of Waki's had a full convex blade with a v-grind for the edge, and the second run are sabre ground:eek: then convexed with a v-grind for the edge?

I would take pics, but I think with the coating, it would be hard to get a good pic.

Why is this thread getting so little attention?

I would like to hear some opinions on the differences.

I don't even know what the difference between the two are. If somebody could explain that would be cool.

My first Waki has moss coating, and looks to be fully convex, with a v grind. Maybe the coating causes it to look different, but my black coated blade, from the second run of Waki's, seems to have a flat area from the top of the spine that comes down farther before the convex starts. Maybe the different coating causes this appearance. It is hard to tell. I might be crazy too:eek::D

Honestly I don't see this, I just looked at a white bladed waki from the first batch, and a white bladed waki from this batch and the grinds look identical. Also, I didn't hear about any change in how they were being ground.

Al, maybe you have a variant ;)

:D:D

My Waki's are loved very much either way!!:cool:
I am glad I did not miss out on these.
Eric,Thanks again:thumbup:

My Waki from the 1st batch seems to maintain the thickness of the spine to about 1/3 to 2/5 of the way down before it begins to convex. The edge looks like it's V ground, but I'm pretty sure it's convexed as well.

I have heard from some who have strong opinions on the subject that a full convexed blade does a better job of passing through some media.

A flat ground blade works like a wedge and has a more difficult time parting media.

And a hollow ground blade can bind up and not pass through the media.

Believe the media in question was tatami mats. I've not tried a fully convexed long blade so I do not know but it sounds reasonable.

Just got mine, which may be a second run. The blade seems to have mild full convex overall. And the edge seems to be convexed as well.
New and unused sure didn't last me long. Within about two minutes I had chopped a frozen pumpkin to bits and started in on some Doug fir and scrub oak. Then stabbed some stumps and hacked at them a bit.
Afterwards I washed up the blade and inspected it. Not much smoothing of the coating, no edge damage, still straight and true. The machete does a better job of chopping branches but as a short sword that can handle a ton of abuse I doubt this blade has many equals.
It's really about perfect, I've been wanting something like this for a long time.
It's a little expensive but worth it in my book.
I was thinking; about three inch longer blade and shorter handle, but then it would not balance like the Waki does. I give it two snaps up!

I liked it so much I bought 4 of them. It also took me about 3 minutes after opening the package to turn one into my user.:thumbup::thumbup:

All I have managed to use mine for, so far, is pretend katas and slicing the crap out of three of my fingers. It is not a blade I am likely to ever sell but I find it hard to christen it with real use, its just too nice.

Can you post pics of what your are talking about so we can see it?

You can see by the pencil marks, how low the saber comes down on the black blade.

Wow, mine is from the first batch and it starts to convex in between both of those. But the 2nd one is flat for a really large part of the blade.

I wonder if this can be attributed to the coating process. My arctic white coated blade seems to be fully convexed but the coating also seems like it is thinner then the two shown above.

wow, and has flats above the pencil mark the entire length?

It does have the flat sabre, above the pencil mark, the whole way, until it turns up at the point.
It feels very heavy duty:eek::thumbup:
And it came very sharp, and is ready to chop trees.:D
The balance is very close to the same spot on both of my Wakis.
The micarta one is lighter though.
This could just be an illusion from the coatings.

A batch one Waki. Flat on the top portion and convex below.

The Flat portion is only at the ricasso because the remainder of the blade is fully convex ground as stated by the OP.
