Photos Did/do people actually carry "Pocket" Stones in their pockets?

I used to carry a small stone in my fishing vest as a kid. Later, I carried a small steel, later switched that to a small diamond-coated steel, then went back to a small traditional pocket stone. When Spyderco started doing ceramic stones in the early 90's, Sal Glessner sent me a couple of the pocket models, which I carried a lot (lost the coarser one unfortunately). A former member here, scruffuk scruffuk , gave me a slightly larger pocket steel that I still carry regularly, but I most commonly carry the Fallkniven CC4 ceramic stone or the locally-made pocket strop I always enjoy using. If I'm using an axe, I'll take a Lansky Puck with me, which I keep in a small tin (I also have a small file)

I keep a small stone in my hunting backpack and small stones with hook grooves in my tackleboxes. I think carrying stones in the pocket was more common when a man used his knife constantly and daily to make a living and only had one knife. I go deer hunting with one knife in the pocket, one knife in the belt pouch and two knives in the backpack - hard to wear out an edge on one or two deer with that many sharp knives! OH

I keep a dmt diafold sharpener in my bag, and have an assortment of files in the bucket truck. I did occasionally carry an artic fox pocket stone in my jacket pocket before I lost the plastic sleeve it came in.

Huh.

I've never carried a stone. I don't recall ever dulling a knife during a day's use enough to even need one.
Cutting carpet dulls one pretty quickly....

ask me how I know.....

When I travel, I carry a small diamond stone 1" X 4" ? or so in my carry bag.... it comes in handy when/if I dull a blade..... like I did my sheepfoot blace on the yellow sowbelly this past weekend, cutting carpet... 😞

I have three different examples of this device. This particular one belonged to my Dad (1914-1992). One of them is either in my pocket or in my fanny pack or otherwise close to hand most of the time.

I have an EZE LAP model M in my bag at work.
I tried to carry it on me, but it didn't really work out for me.

Personally I think if I carried a stone on me I'd wind up over sharpening my knife in an act of boredom.

I carry a Eze-Lap model L with most the plastic handle cut off, in the zip part of my wallet. I have done so for at least 30 years or the late 1980's. Before that I had a small pocket 'carborundum' stone in leather slip that was in my pocket if I ventured out in the boonies. In the city, I'd just use the bottom of a coffee mug if I was out and about.

If you carry a knife, its nice to have a small hone on hand for emergency touch up. Like my old man once told me, 'When you walk out the door in the morning, you never know what life will throw at ya."
