I was talking to some neighbors who were about to leave on a camping trip, and their 6 year old came up to me to show me his new Kershaw Emerson trainer knife that his dad said they bought it to train him how to use a knife. They probably didn't realize its intention is more specifically martial arts training, and that something like a semi dull lockback may have been better to actually be able to use (that was what my dad gave me as a first knife). I asked the dad if he knew what the wave on top did, and of course he didn't. So I showed him, and then his 6 year old proceeded to wave it out of his pocket as well. Let me tell you that was funny as hell to watch 😂. But now I feel a little guilt that his early experience with knives are not geared toward respecting a blade, and I sure hope he never gets injured when he is handed something with an actual edge as opposed to his rounded off unsharpened one. Should I have just kept quiet?

youre good. he would have eventually waved it open by accident and figured it out. ive seen folks who couldnt wave open to save their lives do it by accident when not trying......and then trying to duplicate what they did.

Just make sure he knows to angle the blade outwards from his body when he waves the knife open! I gave an Emerson wave to a friend and he proceeded to twist the knife inwards while waving it open, slicing his ass with the tip in the process (it didn't occur to me that someone might do this).

As for using a knife as a weapon, that has more to do with personality and nothing to do with how one was introduced to knives IMO.

Big mistake!

The next time you see that kid he’ll be wearing all black, stainless steel skull rings, and have an Emerson tattoo on his forearm.

He’ll be super excited to show you his new custom cqc 6 that he made his dad buy out of his college fund. Cause college is for sissies! He’s going to be a welder, ride a harley and do EKI knife mods on the side.

You just created another EKI fanatic!

Everyone should have the opportunity to learn to wave open at a young age ! 😼

Some guidance about when it's and where the technique is socially acceptable , might help avoid issues . ;)

If you have parental approval to teach a child, it's fine. Otherwise it's skirting iffy territory at best.

I don't care for the wave personally, so it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea.

My rajah III has a sort of disc that does the same thing. I nicked my finger trying to get it out of my work pants because the pockets have an angle to them. I wish I could get rid of it without leaving a weird hole and blank space there. Gotta love the ol spidey hole.

Only after one cuts themself with a knife, do they respect it. It’s an early childhood learning experience. At least for me it was.
I got a Swiss Army knife when I joined the Boy Scouts. I cut everything with it. One day I decided to stab a tree and the blade folded and cut my palm. That was an invaluable lesson on knives, their use and the reason for locks.

My take.

You did the only responsible thing. His pops did a bad, silly thing. If he decided the fella was ready and bought him a real Emerson, he could have got hurt snagging that thing they didn't understand on his pocket.

Imagine the guilt when you buy and gift him a reasonable first knife. Dad shame will block the sun. 😂

Nothing wrong with an early start. I wish I had a waved trainer at 6 years old.. I had a stash of broken Swiss army knock offs and dull stockmans.

Heck I’ve seen adults treat kitchen knives with, erm, a lack of courtesy lmao.

EDIT: Eh, at least with that trainer knife, I don’t think the kid will hurt himself with it.
