Did I find some ceramic insowool (SP?)?

I picked up a gas stove from the curb today. Took it home and took it apart to add the the scrap metal pile. When I got the sides and top off, this is what I saw:

I gently pulled it off the inner part of the stove and laid it all out. If this is ceramic insulating blanket that can be used in a forge, I think this would qualify as a good find:D:D I didn't measure any of it, but that is a 5 gallon gas container. Not only that, but the oven burner looks like it might work for some other things as well. Just have to get the fittings for propane.
Think this ceramic insulation?

seeing as how it's free - you could still test it.

You can always hit it with a cutting torch and see if it melts easily.

But considering the materials and work it takes to build a forge, new stuff is probably cheaper.

Rob, I think what you've got there is the for-runner to inswool. It is meant only as a heat insulation and not to be used exposed directly to fire. It works for heat transfer OK and with the right project it could be used in the outer part of the case away from direct flame.

Keep your eyes open on Ebay. I once bought a full roll from a warehouse supply. Just keep running a search for inswool and see what pops up. If you can find what it is someone is selling then you can do your research on the product and figure out what it is they have for sale. The minute I saw the roll for sale I realized what it was and after a little research was able to figure out what it was worth. I immediately set about to figure what I would have to purchase it at and be able to sell by the foot and still ship across country and keep the price at a reasonable price to be able to afford the whole thing!

I got it for such a good price I was able to resale at a enough profit to individuals (and still beat the suppliers prices). The price I was selling it for by the foot was a good fair price and I kept enough for me too use twice over at no cost to line my forge, for myself and everyone was satisfied!

Till my forge fell off my cart and busted up the lining (then I got smart enough too mount it too the cart) and I had to use the remainder of what I had to reline it. If I still had some I would let you have it!

Check the supplies sections of each of the knife forums. That is where I sold the remainder of what I had. I priced it out by the foot so that it was as reasonable as the stuff the suppliers were selling and it was a win/win for all involved! I wasn't looking too make a profit just make it where everyone could afford it!

PM sent via email!

Yep, that is insulation....not Insuwool. It will work for some shop tasks, but isn't for building forges and ovens.

Herre is a use. Make a hot work table by putting this insulation under a 12X24" sheet of 1/4 mild steel. Make a a sheet metal box to fit this top sheet, put some spacers of soft fire brick to make it flush with the box top, put the insulation in the box, set the top plate on. That way you can set down hot blades,do soldering with torch, or even weld on the top without the underside burning the bench. The hot work box can be set aside when not needed.
