i traded my Benchmade 930 kulgera for an RC-4.... now, i really was itching fo that RC4 but looking on the price jump between the two... did i get a fast one pulled on me?

Well they are two extremely different knives, made for extremely different purposes. If you found yourself having more than enough edc type folders and were in need of a solid do all fixed blade, then I say you made a great trade. Besides that, the RAT warranty carries over to anyone who the knife is given to. RATs warranty is worth the trade in itself if you ask me. Better than BMs, and just about anyone elses in fact.

I rarely look at a trade in relation to $$$ value. If I have something someone can use, and I either don't, or can't, give the knife (or whatever it may be) the use it was made for, I'll trade for something I'll use more. I'll even take a bit of a loss if I find something I really want to try.

RATs can't be beat, IMHO. Jeff's a good guy, and his knives are tanks.

thx - cpr

I totally agree:thumbup:

That's very debatable. But good for you if it's your belief.

This is just a copy and paste from the Rat cutlery website.

If you screw it up, break it, or cut it in two with a cutting torch, send it back and we'll replace it. Warranty is transferable. In other words, we warranty the knife no matter how many times it's been traded, sold or given away. We don't ask for a sales receipt, date of purchase or where you bought the knife - No fine print and no hassles. If you have a problem, contact us

Now I love benchmade but they don’t come near this.

If you are talking strictly replacement cost, yes you traded a higher value knife for one with a lower value.

However we don't know the condition of the knives etc. so not really fair to pass judgement.

I agree with the other posters that say; if you got a knife you are going to use, or use more, for a knife that you weren't using, or using very little. Or, if you got a knife you like for a knife you didn't like. Then it was a good trade.

Good post, this I think is the best thing about trading.

Well, was your 930 used? Did his come with the sheath only...? It depends on alot of different things. If your happy, you didn't get jipped.

So is Benchmade's and probably many others.

My suggestion is that you actually read both warranties before posting something that's gonna make you look like you don't know what you're talking about.;)

Benchmade's warranty:
"...Benchmade Knife Company, Inc. warrants to the original owner...."

You got a knife that you were "itching" to get and let go a knife that you were obviously willing to part with. Unless the guy with the Rat was twisting your arm, I don't see how you can claim to have been "jipped."

I think Jake had it right first: two very different knives. Trading a folder for a fixed blade is pure preference, and cost doesn;t figure in, in my book, if the trade is right for you.

The RAT does have a better warranty but Benchmade's warranty is nothing to scoff at. Of course, no matter how many times I cut my BMs in half with an oxy/acetelene rig, BM still refuses to refund my money.... ((( :D )))

Which brings an "all-inclusive" warranty into reasonable light: How do we expect to treat our knives? Having a pivot pin wear out, or a liner-lock that has worn down too far on a folder, or breaking the tip off of a fixed blade or the scales coming loose..... these (et al) are valid warranty concerns, all of which would be fixed by either company (with the exception of BM guaranteeing an FB tip from breaking).

I have an Ontario RAT 3. I understand the RC knives are nicer and I may invest in one once I get tired of using a knife as it was designed to be used and decide I want to try stabbing concrete or batoning railroad rail............ or when I get tired of looking at the RAT3

sharpguyjp, I am a pretty careful trader myself, but assuming that both knives were in comparable condition, it sounds like a win-wn trade to me. Even comparing NIB replacement value (and I agree, this is not always a good basis for trades) they're really not too far off.

You did fine. Enjoy the heck out of that RC4!

Before you jump to a conclusion.
I am just speaking from experienece. I sent them 3 knives for repair/service and was never asked for the reciept or purchase date. They did everything for free, except charged me $40 for a new blade for my 710 at my request. I sent it twice, and one time they did not charge me for the return shipping, which is only $5 by the way. I sent knives in a bulk package, but they returned them with factory boxes. Tell me what not to like?

I feel that knife-wise (prices aside) you made out just fine. The Kulgera is a fine knife, and more expensive, but I'd take the RAT any day. :)
