Did I get taken?

Sounds like some weird stuff going on here, consensus suggestions:

1) get to the bottom of it fast
2) talk to the maker on the phone
3) double check what prices for exactly what
4) don't loose your cool, or it will become a bad situation fast

On another note I received a Busse custom shop knife with a minor problem. e-mailed/ called got almost immediate response and WE are reaching an agreement on what the best way to resolve the situation so far they are being very gracious and hospitable as anyone should be when dealing with a customer's concern especially a $500 one. without offending anyone I would research in depth any other bussiness's cust. service before laying out another 500 bucks

P.S. how do you spell buisness?

I received the knife on Thursday and I have had a couple of days to handle it. You were right when you said it would be "Tough". Wow, this thing is built like a tank. I have three small complaints that I would like you to fix.. Two of the grind lines are not perpendicular. That may be the wrong terminology, but if you look at the thumb ramp the grind line dips to one side as opposed to being straigh across. The other grind is on the back of the handle at the butt. All the lines for the handle (which looks great) converge and the resulting flat spot has a square type appearance. In that area the square is off a bit. The third problem is the lack of engraving on the spine of the knife in the handle area. I do not want to sound very critical, I love the knife and I am in awe of your work. But if these problems would be fixed I would greatly appreciate it. Please don't take this the wrong way. Respectfully yours.............. This was the last email sent. I don't know how to communicate it better without a picture or physically being there.

This was sent on Sunday. The maker responded today and seemed to be willing to make me happy. After venting here I will reply to him and try to resolve this. I have no hard feelings I just think that "fair is fair" He quoted the price we agreed on the job and I paid, end of the story.

It is not hard for misunderstandings to happen in describing a knife to be built. It happens to all of us at one time or another. It is how both the customer and the maker deal with the problem that makes the difference in the out come. You have given him the chance to do the right thing. Most makers I know would appreciate the chance to correct a problem. I hope it works out well for both parties.

In responce to your answer to Kydex. Apparently when we inspected the sheath there had been a hairline slice in the kydex from sheathing the knife with the point of the blade. The slice had produced a sharp edge in the kydex that lined up exactly where the scratch on the blade was. I'm sure any foreign matter inside a sheath such as sand would scratch a blade but this sheath was clean in that respect. I would not recommend Kydex with finer blades in my opinion although I would use Kydex for a working knife to beat around with.

Niko

so all of this and the guy was willing to comply

I think you should have waited until getting this resolved before posting this at all!

In my opinion, I feel that I have every right to post here and ask for advice. This was my first knife that was custom made to my specs and I wanted to know if I was being to picky. After reading some of the responses here I believe that for the money spent I have every right to request these problems be resolved. I am sure as a maker Mr. Mayo, you have a different view of my problem. You are entitled to your opinion and so am I. Thanks for your input! By the way I never gave any hint to the identity of the maker, nor did I slander him in any way.

Regardless of where the kydex and scratch were located Kydex WILL NOT scratch steel. Take a piece of kydex and rub the hell out of a piece of steel and there will be no scratches.

Tom Mayo's response is one of pure common sense. You ordered the knife. That required communication. Use the same respect to the maker that you used in ordering it in the first place. Makers are human. Every once in a while we screw-up! And like anyone we can be under the gun and forget something. Unless you are singularly perfect, you should already know this. No advice on this would normally be needed.

Also, pick up a phone. An e-mail is not the best way to communicate your concerns, or feelings.

Mike
