Did I just get a fake Rat 1?

Broke my last knife recently, so I decided to order a Rat 1. I had one, years ago, and it was a beloved knife.

Just got this in. The spine isn't sharp, but is that just because of the black coating?

Also, I thought I remembered the Rat 1 having a thicker spine, with a more aggressive distilled taper.

Is this guy fake?

Do you have other pictures?

Just added two more. Let me know if there's anything specific I can take a shot of. That spine has me confused tough. I thought they were thicker. Also, my old Rat 1 had a VERY sharp spine. I realize the coating on this one might prevent that, but it is far from a sharp spine.

They did use Aus-8 steel... then switched to D2... and I've heard that they're back to using Aus-8.
Where was the knife made? (What Country?)
My Rat 2 says Taiwan: right on the blade.

D2 was an option, not the staple, my friend. Thank you. And mine says made in Taiwan also. I updated with more pictures

Have these knives always been this thin, and I'm just misrembering? I was in my post divorce drinking phase back then, haha.

The Fake ones I have seen have a silver pivot and screws ... I also noticed on my coated version (spine) is slim compaired to my D2 none coated

If I am understanding you correctly, your coated Rat 1 has a thinner spine than your uncoated one?

I was in a hurry, so I ordered it from Amazon. It said it was fulfilled by and shipped by them, so I was hoping this wouldn't happen. The OKC dealer on there apparently ran out before I ordered. I normally order from BladeHQ.
I’m always suspicious about knives and Amazon.

Here’s a spine picture of a legitimate Rat 1 that I sold a couple of years ago.

I just measured both of mine, both have AUS-8 blades.
This one, an recent Model 1A, measures at 7/64 or .112 just ahead of the thumb stud.

This one, an older Model 1 marked RAT, measures exactly the same.

Aus-8 xnd D2 are the available blade steels They make both, charging a slightly higher price for the D2.

Looks real to me. my RAT-1's blade was around 1/8 inch thick.
The spine shoulders were a little bit rounded on mine, too.
The.clip, blade shape, screw positions, screw heads, also look right.

Not to be a smart arse, but do counterfeit RAT-1 or RAT-2 knives even exist?

Not a knock against the RAT1 - or RAT-2 - for that matter, but they are a common "affordable 'low end' every man's" knife.
I believe they retail for under $40, regardless of which blade steel it is.
There is no mystique or "wow factor" about a RAT like there is for example, an expensive Chris Reeve, Hinderer, Benchmade, or other knife that some call "mid techs".

Counterfeiters generally don't bother with knives that retail for less than $150 ~ $200 ... or more.
Are there counterfeits of the sub $100 Spyderco?

Also, keep in mind that over the years a knife is produced, there may be small not publicized changes made to the design. Slightly rounding the spine, for example. Perhaps the legal department decided a user could cut themself on a spine with sharp 90° edges, opening the company to a litany of liability lawsuits.

If you are really worried about your RAT-1 being a fake, send to to OKC, or if you desire nearby take it to them in person, and ask if is real.

Thank you, your spine looks thin too.

I am so confused by this. Can anyone else elaborate on the differences in spine thicknesses between Rat models?

Yes Sir, there are many Rat clones and fakes, actually

I have the D2 model that's made in Taiwan but I think the AUS8 RAT1is now a Chicom product.
