Did I just get a fake Rat 1?

Oh definitely not. The knockoff was beefier... Aside from that; the action was terrible, the thumbstud placement was off and made opening awkward, the gimping felt terrible, the grind was bad, the pocket clip had no retention, the screw holes on the bottom weren't tapped, the screws themselves weren't able to be removed, etc. It was bad.
 
I cannot see the pictures, I see only the red X. They are all made in Taiwan, AUS-8 and D2, except for the Micarta version made in China for some reason. Yes, they do make fake RATs, and Amazon is one of the most likely places to get it.

Another specifically about RAT 1's, this guy gives a lot more talking commentary but may be more relevant. I was looking at the Nylon 6 pattern (as opposed to the G10 of the fake) and the clip, specifically.

There is one thing that is making me worry and that is the jimping in yours. Ontario could have changed it, but I don't know, or I could be seeing things wrong, but look at the jimping on the back of yours vs mine from BHQ:

It looks like they are different heights, looks like yours stops towards the start of the thumbstud whereas mine keeps going to about midway of the thumbstuds. What's up with that, I wonder?

Dude.. all I know is, I distinctly remember my first Rat 1 being way nicer than mine. I even did research thinking maybe Ontario tweeked the design. I sent pictures to Ontario, they said it looks legit. But who looked at it? Jose, who has been working there for 2 years and isn't even a knife enthusiast like we are?

I gave up really caring. I recently tried to add traction to the knife, and really made an ugly duckling even uglier. This is going to be a toolbox knife from now on. If I ever do order another Rat, I'll do it through Blade HQ.

I miss my old Rat, it was a perfect specimen. I wonder how much better the D2 upgrade is over the Aus 8?

Edit: I looked at your picture again. The jimping does look different. Can you take more pictures of your knife? Can I see the entire blade length of the spine?

The RAT is a classic, my man! A real one does truly feel like a fine knife, especially at the price. No complaints with AUS-8, I do like it. It's a "normal" steel, kind of like 420HC or something, just good old classic stuff. D2 will hold the better edge, but I don't scoff at AUS-8 :)

Yeah, toolbox beater if ya can't return. I would, I just love RATs, it's such an "Ol' Reliable" but I get the hassle.
I got some more pics, used my orange satin one to see if it would maybe be more clear than the coated. I hope this helps. Dang fakers, I hope your knife holds up, my man. Hope it turns out real.

I ordered a couple off Amazon and fortunately got real rat 1 knives...but in aus 8. I ordered d2.
Ended up buying a d2 from blade HQ.
Me personally,I sold my D2 .
I prefer the aus 8 same as I prefer Bucks 420hc,which it's really close too btw.
I've looked at a ton of rat 1 knives and the dimensions haven't changed in 20 years.
But if the price was low and it's a good blade,I'd keep it.
Same as I have some Ozark Trail knives I won't part with,simply because their mystery steel is tuff,resharpens ez,gets a razor edge and for $5 they're a beast.
Just use it until ya lose it!
 
You should do yourself a favor and always make sure you order from credible sources
There's a few on ebay, not to mention the other massive knife online retailers. I would be skeptical of Amazon at this point, too many unverified 3rd party sellers that Amazon doesn't keep on top of. If you have doubt

I know, it's crazy - they fake the RAT series, Cold Steel Tuff Lites, just crazy cheap stuff that you wouldn't expect.
I do not like the fact that the micarta RAT is made in China - that Ontario has tooling there. I would stop buying the RAT if it ever switches. I have four, one AUS-8 and one D2 of both. But like people will tell you, in China, sometimes the fakes are made right there next to the real ones, or on the same machinery, after hours or whatever, and without the quality control. That happens all the time with clothes. Not saying this is the case here, just thinking out loud.

But, yes, unfortunately, you do have another knife to get. It's like a Buck 110, even if you have a million Spydercos and Benchmade, you still gotta try the 110, right?
The RAT, either one in either steel, is just such a pleasant budget knife. I love the heft of the 1, and the gentlemanly size of the 2. Just make sure it's real!

I like the orange, myself, but I have a white RAT2 in D2, that I was thinking about painting with grey, red, and blue into "R2D2", I have the concept and all. Just need to figure out what kind of paint will best on Nylon.
