I made a knife from a circular saw blade and hardened it. I experimented and tried using a butane torch to temper. It took about a minute to turn blue/purple, and the blue crept over to my edge.
My question is this: did it lose to much of its temper? Doing some research it seems that since the blade was not heated for more than about a minute it may not have been heated all the way through. I took a sharp corner on a piece of brass and used that to press the blade edge into. I could visibly see the edge bending and springing back. I did the same with my serrations which are pretty tall and pointy. They bend over and sprang right back into place. That tells me the edge isn't too brittle or soft.
Thoughts?
