Okay so I went to check out that drill press I mentioned in the other post. It's a 16 speed heavy duty benchtop model it is a Central machinery. I brought a piece of mild steel and a bit with me. The hole really didn't seem to have any slop in it when I inserted the bit in again after I drilled it, so I'm guessing it doesn't make a bad hole. He said he had a guy offer him $75 and managed to get him to take $50

Also got a beat up but functional vice and he threw in a box of various bits as well as a what looks like a complete set of drill stops (7 different sizes from small to large). That dark thing is a brand new still sealed in the plastic reamer....What I'll use it for I have no idea but I'll take it.

Here's the original pic of the press. It sits a little over 3 feet tall

He also had a small Jet shopline dust collection system only a 3/4 horsepower but I'm guessing you can slap a bigger motor on it right?

I haven't measured it but quite a bit of crushproof tubing for it

He also had some calipers, micrometer, and height guage and file cleaner. The drill stops is that ring of black things at the bottom.

Here is the breakdown of that pic minus the drill stops pictured at the bottom:

Mitutoyo 10" height guage

Calipers I didn't notice a name on

And an older but seemingly brand spanking new micrometer, even has all the original paperwork that comes in the box.

He also had 5 plastic lazy susan little turntable things he handed me to for whatever use I can find for them.

All told I got it all for $175.... How'd I do?

I have a bench top drill press the same configuration , only has the POWERLINE name on it,it has only lasted 25 years so far without a glitch. as John said you made out like a bandit.

Anyone know if it's possible and/or easy to put something like a 1.5 HP motor on that dust collector? The guy said it's possible but I'd just have to get a bigger bag (the one that sits on top) otherwise it would stall... I don't know much about dust collection systems but I know Jet is a good name and figured it had to be worth it.

EDIT: He also has a bunch of stuff laying around he doesn't even know where everything is. It was his fathers old machine shop and he's converting it into an apartment, but his family has been using the space for storage. He has to get it cleaned out by the end of the month. He said he has boxes of files and God knows what else. He said when he digs it all out, he'll take a bunch of pictures and email them to me. If I see anything else he said I'm welcome to come down and pick out what I want.

Those Mitutoyo height gages cost around $300 new. The drill press looks to be better built than the newer ones. I'd say you stole the lot!

absolutly you made out like a fat rat. Great job, I'd buy everything in that machineshop if you can for such a sweet deal!

I think you did well. :)

Just for clarity, not to be a party pooper... but that vernier height gauge you got is not the same as the dial height gauge that polish avenger linked to. Still a very handy tool to have and worth some green. :)

To me, the best thing in your lot is that Starrett mic. I have a few of them, the cheapest is a brand new one I got on ebay for $35, the most expensive is one I bought on sale through a tool supplier for $100.

The very best part of this is that you got a whole bunch of new toys and all at once! :D

DOH! Nick, you're right. In my mind's eye, there was a dial. Time for my meds.

No worries Mark! :) I saw one on ebay and it was still the total $$$ that FH paid ($175!) so I think he did very well.

I hadn't seen the edit, but I would definitely go back to see what you can get your hands on FH.

You never know with these things. I drove over an hour yesterday to go to an auction preview that I thought would suck thousands of dollars out of my pocket, and it turned out everything was so beat up I didn't want any of it. On the other hand, I've gone to places expecting little and coming away with a truckload of stuff.

I hope you find more good stuff! :D

So even without the dial you guys are saying it's still worth over 100? Funny part was I didn't even know the name I clearly now nothing about them just that I wanted one. I remember looking at guages in Grizzly that were like $15-20. I asked him what he wanted for it he said "make me an offer" I was like "i don't know 5 bucks (pause) 10 bucks" he says "10 bucks, sold!"

This reminds me of my uncle when he got his shop smith. The widow that was selling it had him come over. He looked over the shop smith and the tooling, told her what it was worth and what he could afford to pay. She said done deal how soon can you have the place cleaned out? He said he was only interested in the shop smith and the price he told her only covered that and the tooling. She said she didn't care, the stuff was in the way and if he wanted the shop smith he had to take all the other tools and such too...

He said I'll be back with my son in law and two pickups in a half hour!

The Starrett micrometer is at least 100$.

Yep. Grand Theft! ;)

I just checked the model and maybe it's not that old? Or at least they're still making it. The model number is a 230RL

EDIT: Wow I just checked the price on it on Amazon.... Yeah, I done good :D

Yeah, that micrometer isn't very nice. I've never heard of "Starrett" before, and it is a "vernier" so it is no good. Just send it to me rather than throw it away...

:D
