I hammered on a piece of Aldo's 80CRV2 last night. Made a point, put a distal taper on it, then hammered in some bevels. Then heated it up and let it cool to black a couple times (normalized?)

This was my first time to bang hot steel with a hammer, Any tips?

A momentous occasion Sir. Congratulations! People can give their tips on forging, but they are just that, tips. Its truly in the practice where good forging is found.
A gentleman that apprenticed at my shop spent a little time at my anvil then went home and forged a 100 blades over three months. He is one of the best hand forgers I know.
My best advice, let the hammer do the work and its about rhythm when forging.

Enjoy, its great therapy, Fred

Awesome. Keep at it... you'll have a blast.

Learn proper form so you don't hurt yourself. Check out videos by folks who teach blacksmithing... they hit stuff more than the average bladesmith would. Hofi is a favorite of mine but not any single style is the best.
