I usually don’t keep ranting about a new knife like this, but, this one is absolutely my new favorite and I’ve had lots of opportunities to use it the last few days.

We cut down an oak tree and an old dead rose of Sharon which made for lots of small limbs to destroy with the HDFK and lots of logs that needed to be cleaned of small branches and leaves before going on the wood pile or yard bags.
My Wife was pretty happy about the yard clean up and added a bunch of lilac, white raspberry, creeping ivy, and small cotton woods to the list.
The knife did an outstanding job of cleaning the logs of the small stuff and prying the bark from some of the nasty wood that I wanted clean for the fire place.
It chopped through the limbs more efficiently than using cutters and was much more fun than the saw. I love the handle on it.
To my surprise the old dead rose of Sharon seemed harder than the oak but the knife really didn’t mind.
Unfortunately a lot of the clean up was intertwined with a cyclone fence and although I was very careful and didn’t notice it, i must’ve hit it with a swing because I ended up with a small chip/nick in my blade right in the belly with a flattening of the edge in front of it boo- hiss- boo.
At least it’s not like it was used to cut nails or bolts.

Since my wife decided to try the knife out I told her that she chipped it because she’s jealous of how much I like it ;)
I let that play out for a few before I told her that it was already there. The kids had a good laugh out of it. She must not be angry because she’s still making me dinner, though Women generally use poison to kill so I guess we’ll see.

I stropped the edge on a ceramic rod trying to pull the bits that curled from the chip back to the center and then gave it a quick and dirty sharpening, not that any other part of the edge needed it yet. It worked pretty well.
I still have a divot of sorts but it’s so minor that it’ll easily come out if I ever really sharpen it on anything more than the ceramic rod.
It shaves hair easily and is still pretty to me.

I guess the only thing I don’t like about the knife is that CPK isn’t making them right now. I’d definitely buy another one because I have two boys and I don’t want them fighting over it, I just dread having to pay the uptick since it’s out of production. Hopefully they’ll make the HDFK again.

If you read all of this, thank you and I have no way to give you that 2 minutes of your life back-sorry.

I hope that you all have a great Independence Day.

I wouldn’t put too much effort into trying to remove such a little ding. I’d do pretty much what you did. Clean it up a bit and let it fade during future sharpenings. I am a little surprised cyclone fencing was able to do that.
I’ve batoned kindling with mine a bit and hit it down into gravel a few (several) times without any visible damage. Light stropping and it was back too 100%.
I chopped down an old, dead eastern redbud with my BC recently. It’s classified as a soft hardwood. It was dense, knotty (pippy) and hard as hell. I thought for sure the edge would show some minor damage. In fact, I was sure I saw some minor dings in the edge. After I washed it with warm water and soap, and then wiped it down with mineral oil, I found the edge was actually still pristine.
I’m sure there are HDFK’s available.

Thank you for that reply.
I hope I didn’t come across as a whiner in the post.
The little nick/chip is no big deal to me,
I’m more upset that I did it than I am that it happened- if that makes sense.

Do you mean directly from CPK or on the secondary market?
Directly from CPK would be really nice.

You didn’t sound like you were whining or upset by it. I was just surprised it happened.
Secondary market on the HDFK. When you are ready to buy make a post in the CPK buy, sell, trade thread. I’m sure you’ll get some reasonable offers.

The HDFK for now is a dormant pattern. I hesitate to call it as a completely retired pattern because Nathan may revisit it with some tweaks but since there were hundreds upon hundreds of them made between late 2017 to late 2018, I would say that CPK will be dealing with other irons in the fire ;)

That’s what I gathered from reading through the threads, hopefully someone will let one go for a reasonable price soon.

Thanks for the reply.

FYI regarding HDFK pricing: there were actually two CPK pricing structures regarding this pattern because in the first Q 2018, CPK increased its own prices across the board by factor of 10% to 25% depending on the size of the knife. IIRC the HDFK went up by something like 20% and since then, even the secondary market prices have been pretty sane but as supply dwindles and the demand rises, that could also change to the sellers' favor. That said, unless you desperately seek like a mint and collectible one with antique edgecut handles, you will be able to get one LNIB within 10% proximity to the 2018 CPK prices, which is not too shabby!

Thank you very much for that reply, the pricing info is all new to me.

You can use honing steel to try and work that “Chip” if it’s actually a warp/bend. I can’t tell by the pic.

To sharpen, I use the wicked edge. I’d always say honing steel to start if it’s a bend etc.

Thanks, I’ve never used a guided system other than trying out a Lansky many years ago. I’m more of a free hand kind of guy. The Wicked edge makes that Lansky look like sharpening on a brick paver in comparison.

I’ve always tried to “ move “ the steel when possible, then sharpen as needed. Ever since trying ceramic rods I’ve found very little need for the stones, but, things happen and I have to use them every now and then.

My next foray will be getting a proper strop and some compound ( only been on my mind for about 2 decades ). If I do well with it I’ll use it before the ceramic is needed, hopefully keeping even more steel on the knife for a longer life.

Anybody have any suggestions on Strops and compounds ?

Yeah I’d do exactly what you did to make it serviceable.

I see them mostly listed around cost right now. It wouldn’t surprise me if prices go up as NIB examples dwindle.

Hopefully not before I grab another one.
When I can afford it I try hard to get two of things that I know I’ll use and keep for the long term, especially hunting, hiking, and general woods gear. I’m teaching the boys what I can and when I’m gone I’d like them both to have keep sakes even if they’re just going to cut sod with them or whatever- making the attempt to provide memories through tangible items that maybe they’ll pass down one day is the hope.
At this point my little girl will probably end up with one for each hand while the boys work on a computer somewhere, she’s an unstoppable force of nature.

if I had a dollar for every ding I put into the various CPKs I've been using over the past few years, I'd definitely be able to afford a new one. I hit rocks all the time, even though I try really hard not to. Sometimes I throw them into rocks, also by accident. A little elbow grease on the oil stone and we're back at it again. The point on my HDFK is so thick now!

It seems to be like avoiding pot holes, the more you try the more you end up hitting.

Pointy is good for all that throwing you do with it :)
