Did some more work with the HDFK how do you all sharpen your D3V

Thanks, I’ll pick one up.
I like the idea that it is pre loaded with compound for my first one. One less thing for me to mess up on my first go.

You're welcome :)...just remember not to apply too much downward pressure or you'll make the pliable/flexible leather wrap around your apex and you'll wind up blunting the edge.

Thanks again!
Sometimes I lean into the sharpen a little too hard before I realize that I need to lighten up, I’ll keep it in mind on the strop.

That looks really nice.
How long does the pre loaded compound last on a side before needing more put on ?
I got it like 2 years ago and it’s gotten shiny on the black and green sides because I pushed too hard many times and used it to sharpen and not just strop. Also, there’s so much diamond dust stuck in the plain smooth side that I meow use that side to polish metal where I’ve sanded something and made it rough, like the bolster of a knife I dropped. But I haven’t done anything as far as adding compound and it still works.

There another bat strop with beaver fur on one side for testing the edge, which I am kinda curious about. The JRE is a really good value though.

As far as stones I also recently picked up a Fallkniven dmt/ceramic but I’m looking hard at a set of Arkansas stones from RH Preyda since I have actual razors that need honing.

Thank you again for the reply.
I’m leaning towards getting the bat strop over the other suggestion. I like the idea of having 4 levels all set up in one unit.
It is bigger than most of my stones so I’m sure I’ll be able to use it well enough.

I guess the only thing I don’t like about the knife is that CPK isn’t making them right now. I’d definitely buy another one because I have two boys and I don’t want them fighting over it, I just dread having to pay the uptick since it’s out of production. Hopefully they’ll make the HDFK again.

If you seriously want another one right now, there is what I would consider a very good deal on one just listed at Ft Henry Custom Knives with good looking rag micarta.

Thank you very much for the heads up!
I was just on the FHCK website ( sounds dirty like that ) 2 days ago and didn’t see this one.

It is my normal bad luck that I just paid Jo C. Today for a Medium Chopper and spent my play money. Now I’ll have to try to move something along before that disappears.

I really appreciate you helping out, my wife on the other hand, probably not so much ;)

Another option to consider for strops:

Go to Lowe's/Home Depot/Menards and get strips of balsa wood (1/8" x 4" x 36"?) and glue them to finished 1" x 4" boards.

Cut them to whatever length you prefer and load them with DMT dia-paste (available in tubes on Amazon). You can try the different microns to see how polished of an edge you prefer (load only 1 grade per strop you make).

The balsa is more forgiving than leather or a hard surface.

Ohhhh, I like that idea!
Plus I can get my kids involved in the little project.
Thank you very much.

I have and like kangaroo hide or horse hide strops ... but I have gotten to mostly using a ceramic rod "steel" type for touch up while using them ...

And DMT Diafolds are great and a quick simple set to sharpen with ... but I like the feedback on my Shapton Glass stones better if I need to sharpen my CPKs ...

But they can go quite awhile with minor touch ups on the ceramic hone ...

Thanks for the reply.
Other than for repairing damage I’ve pretty much only used ceramic rods for probably 15 years.
I’m very interested in the strops and will most likely build or buy one.

It’s a skill I’d like to master and a good excuse to pick up a straight razor.

Always good to learn something new ...
all I would say on strops ... I'd try to stick with firm leather or even basswood or something nice and firm ...

I think what compound you use is a lot of personal preference ... I prefer a DMT paste ... but several compounds work well.

Thanks for the tip.

I’m looking forward to trying it out and I have a cheap beater knife ( Schrade SCHF1 ) to practice on before I strop a CPK, or even a CRK.
