Hey fellow Hawksters.
Any of you get your Vietnam Hawk in the mail yet? I didn't receive mine yet; just can't wait. Target and pack are ready to go. Adventure awaits!
If you have yours, let us know what you have chopped, spiked or scared away!

See you on the trail.
Greg

First impression (from someone who's used to khukuris and other tomahawks): "It's kinda cute."

Looks like a midget next to some of my other cutlery.

Other out of the box impressions:

1) VERY light; moves like lightning on a few figure-eight patterns I did while playing around.
2) I have the obtuse-angle, armor piercing edge grind, which I think I'm going to stick with.
3) The edge geometry and design are excellent. One thing I notice about the design of the bit is that, when I fire off a chop, the top point strikes the target first, bites in, then the rest of the blade cuts its way in. Gives excellent penetration versus, say, a curved blade where my standard flying-pizza-box target just gets knocked away. The spike likewise is excellent. Because of a slight offset to the grind, it doesn't terminate in a point, but rather an angled chisel-tip. Hard to describe, but I'm sure much more durable than a pointed spike. The RR Spike uses the same geometry. Also, excellent penetration.
4. Flared butt provides excellent grip retention on hard swings.

I LIKE!

Only con is that I gotta get a Caracci sheath. The envelope style is hard-core rugged, but not fast enough for me.

Excellent piece, Andy & Bobby. Nice job.

Got mine and like it. I'm hours away from taking it to the field. It is going to see some desert action.

I have made a few modifications, such as thinned out the edge and put a cord wrap just below the head.

I had already made the head a little loose, but a hit on the wedge took care of that. Also that was one of the reasons why I added an epoxy and cord wrap below the head for support.

I like the sheath, it mounts well to my hydration pack.

Talk to you when I get back in a few weeks.
Greg

I can't wait for mine to arrive!!

Got mine via UPS yesterday. Like it a lot. Fit and finish were fine. The sheath is much more useful than I expected. Got me questioning if I really want the expensive Caracci(sp?) version. Cant beat this sheath for general carry. I will probably get the Caracci but if its not just what I want and fast to extract from its going back.

The edge is thick on the hawk, but fairly sharp and will indeed be less vulnerable with hard use to rolling than a thin one. Not sure if I will ever thin the edge out or not. Really was not looking for a knife on a stick. Have not tried throwing it and not sure I will.

The hawk does not have really the right edge for much utility cutting of wood or branches but would work in a pinch. Probably would work good for splitting a deer's breast and pelvis bone though if needed. A fast swing at a big weed cuts the weed cleanly indicating it will slice without just pushing the target out of the way. I also noticed that the edges of the hawk seem to penatrate first and then the rest of blade cuts its way into the target. The spike end is really nice and while not sharpened, penatrates the target really nicely leaving a big .45 caliber plus sized hole.

All in all well worth the price. Great Job Andy and crew. Now the only question is to get the optional sheath or put that money toward a RR spike hawk instead. -mike
