I'm down to 2 sets of stag scales and 1 really nice crown stick for future knives.
Ok, let's see yours(c'mon PhilL).

I am humbled to be included in such a nice collection. I am proud to be on the bottom rung of this crew

There is just something about stag........
I have a Crawford Kasper model with stag overlays that is absolutley stunning, at least in my eyes. Used to collect a few of Warren Osborne's back in the late 80's when I had him build some of his bigger thumb stud models that were some nice knives. On several I had him put stag on and they were very visually appealing. Sad to say I have traded all of them. I like smoother stag on the knives as it tends to make a better surface to grasp. The deep craggy stag just does not appeal to me for some reason. India stag is my favorite.

Dave, you know I'm a sucker for stag. You've got some really nice pieces there. Right now I own 15 knives with stag handles (hopefully 16 when the mailman gets here today). I have two more on order, and like you two sets of scales and a huge 5" carver for three more knives. My knives are all pictured on my PhotoPoint site, they range from Bowies too multi-blades, customs, handmades, customized and production. Although I like other natural handle materials I pretty much stick to buying stag.

Congratulations on your beautiful stag knives.

Would you gentlemen mind letting me know how you maintain your stag? I've heard several methods, including immersing them in mineral oil every six months. If they are immersed in mineral oil for a few days, does this effect the blade and folding mechanism?

Thanks for your help.

Ron

The latest additon to the family arrived today. This little baby weighs in at about 2 oz. and measures 5 1/2". This was one of Kit Carson's limited run of F4 neck knives with Daryl Meier Damascus (33 knives made). This is the only one Kit made with stag scales.

The knife was a gift from my friend Don Eargle. My thanks to Don, Kit & the boys.

Ron, sorry I just saw your question. Fact is I don't give my stag any special treatment, luckily I'm Italian so all I have to do is handle them a lot.

Thanks for the comments, guys. Phil, that is one nice F4.
Ron, I used to just wipe them down with mineral oil a couple of times a year. Now Jerry Fisk says(in a recent magazine article) to actually soak them in mineral oil for 8 hours twice a year. I emailed him to make sure I read his article right and he said it's what he reccomends and it won't hurt the steel.
Tom, W.D. doesn't make many straight ones, maybe a few a year.
Don't know how I forgot this one-it was the first handmade I ever bought. Made by Vernon Hicks(deceased), bought from Paul Basch at the 1992 NY Custom Show:

I read that same article...but wasn't sure because Jerry did not mention the oil's effects on steel & machanisms.. Thanks for confirming that for me...

Stag is my favorite handle material and I want to preserve the knives that I have. Tough to get good stag nowadays...it's kinda odd that stag handled knives have not really appreciated in value since the ban on exportation (from India)...don't you think?

Ron

XRayed, that is a nice bowie! I've always liked Bagwell's knives, very well made.
Ron, if you do a search on the shop talk forum for Fisk, he's posted a few times here and his email is listed. He is really friendly and open to answering questions, nice guy for a National Living Treasure

At the ECCKS show in March I was talking to one of the suppliers while I bought some stag scales. She tells me that in India they're just piling up all the stag that is shed and burning it. What a waste.

Other than my old #1 Randall, This is my FAVORITE stag knife.

I've seen that knife of yours before, and it is really a beauty. And of course, Gary's sheaths are always awesome and well made.
