Simple question, simple poll. Not asking whether it’s important to you or not, just asking for your honest experience. Out of the GEC knives you own, and have owned from new, how many were paper-cutting sharp* when you received them; All ; Most (more than half); Some (less than half); or None.

*Paper-cutting sharpness relates to the claim that “every GEC knife will cut paper before it leaves the Factory.”

I have over 200 that are all wicked sharp! They arrived that way right from the FACTORY!

I don't have near the experience with GECs that some here do; I've only owned four. Not one of them was what I'd call sharp. It didn't take much effort to get a good edge on my 73 though. But paper cutting sharp? I'd have to say no. Maybe paper tearing...

I voted "most." The knives I have purchased in 2012 - 2013. Knives purchased 2011 (when I first started buying GEC) not so much...

I think the woman they have doing the sharpening now does an excellent job. Just wish the angles were not quite as obtuse.

I have about 40 or so and everyone of them came to me wicked Paper Sharp and as of yet ( knock on Wood ) I have not
had the first problem.!* If I have any then I will go back to my old stand-by.!!***

Only the Charlow, all the others ripped more than cut...
Especially the few from 2011 (my first ones) were butterknifey, the newer examples got better.

But I think we all perceive sharpness a little differently, sharp in one eye is dull in another ;)

Indeed, I know most of us would define sharpness as a little beyond this, but for the purposes of this poll, an ability to cleanly slice paper will suffice as sharp :)

Kind of a subjective question I would say they all could cut paper, put the profile on my #68 owl master spear would not cut jute twine pen was fine, you could go back to paper and it would slice effortlessly, go back to the twine and saw back and forth and could not cut it. My#54 moose, #62 courthouse, #47 F&F, and the #92 eureka all had even grinds and were very sharp. The #68 had a very uneven grind and I had to spend some time to get it to my liking, it would cut paper but nothing else. Not a problem as I enjoy sharpening, I would say the eureka has a great edge and profile, it was really done right.
Indecisive on how to vote, at face value yes all cut paper, but I really don't need to cut paper :-)
Sorry for the ramble Jack
Pete

I bet they grind obtuse to reduce the likelihood of scratches, even if the blade is wrapped. when I was a kid I got on a scratch free kick and all my angles were more obtuse. to this day i have that tendency just a bit. more now because I want a strong edge and i sharpen a fair amount of trusharp.

How do you know what "most of would define sharp" as? Obviousley you speak for the whole Forum.

Honestly I didn't check any of them. I knew they were too dull for what I prefer. The users were all sharpened without trying to cut a thing. I could just tell by feeling and looking that they were mostly very dull. I have had a few (73's) that got pretty wicked with a quick stropping, but nothing like you can actually achieve. So, I can not answer your poll.

It's regularly discussed here and elsewhere on this forum. I think most would say sharp is when a knife will dry-shave hairs off the back of your arm. Some of our members are more stringent. That's just my opinion, but you're welcome to go ahead and start another poll.

This one however would already seem to indicate that not ALL GEC knives leave the factory paper-cutting sharp, a claim which you made elsewhere.

I do know that every GEC knife will cut paper before it leaves the Factory.

I answered some. I have a 61 half congress, a 62 whittler, a 33 Conductor, a 33 whittler, and 5 assorted F&F tools. I'd say the F&F tools came sharper than the others. Out of the tube most would only sorta cut paper, but would tear more than cut. Of those, most only needed a quick touch up with ceramics to get sharp, but a few need or needed serious work to get sharp. None would shave arm hair without a lot of work.

I had to sharpen on blade on a trapper, that is why they got a most vote from me. They do a good job overall

I only own 2 GECs (I'm not a big fan of carbon steel slip joints). The 2011 forum knife was sharp enough to cut paper. The 2012 forum knife was dull enough to tear paper. I voted "some".

Something funny to think about. The very 'early' Gec knives came pretty darn dull, but they had very nice even edges side to side and the entire length. A lot of noise was made on the forums about it and apparently GEC 'upped' their honing game and process. Since then I noticed sharper knives but more uneven edges both side to side and the length of the blade.

Absolutely Ernie, I think we all love GEC here, just wanted to test the 100% sharpness claim
