But I did learn enough from my first couple knives to do some workspace building.....

Yesterday we took off (two people hand excavating and filling 10 yards of dirt and putting in a 96 foot french drain is ENOUGH for the week). So I decided I'd take care of a "few shop organization issues" and cut some blade blanks out of my L6 saw blade stock.

Well, once I got started, I ended up building an 8 foot long 2 foot deep bench, framed into my back fence. So it's on 6 4x4 posts, concrete set, with the cross framing out of 2x6 I had laying around. the top in sitting directly on the 2x6 and 4x4 posts and is 2x12 scaffold stock that I had left from a job. Heavy, good wood. on top of that are two sections covered by 1/2 inch 2x2 foot plywood, with another 2x6 between them that runs out from the bench 6 inches for my 5 inch vise.

The "bare" 2x1 top is left for mounting my belt sanding jig (craftsman belt sander mounted vertically on some wood frame), my disc sander, and the drill press I made out of a drill guide yesterday.

The drill press is pretty cool, I used screws and expoy to take my old dumpster drill guide and mount it on a 1x5x8 epay (brazillion ironwood) plate, then ripped some to make a 1.25 inch wide raided shelf with clamping areas for bblades. Pretty cool.

Oh, yeah, then I built a shed roof over it.

And my son, naturally, wanted "his own sized" bench, so I had to make a little 12x24 bench right behind mine and he spent 3 hours happily pounding nails through it.

I left the grinder and jigsaw out on the uncovered 8 foot bench that I already had, with another vise. I can do my really rough cutting and grinding and make a huge mess there.

Now I have wonderful space to work in, so it is raining like mad. Guess I'll drink to Murphy.

Next step, get the forge put somewhere. I have a stump in the ground that's a great mount for an anvil, about 40 feet from my workshop....
