Didn't Survive

Very sad :(

It's so important to let people know where you are going and when you will be back....

Sad story.

What would one have to carry to assist in this kind of situation???

Mobile phone? = would probably not work in a well this deep. He probably had one.

Rope? = I don't know
mirror= not useful
whistle= maybe

In this situation you need the help of others. What signalling device would help here?

He might have tried to shoot for signaling since he had a shot gun.

A smoke flare maybe, this is just a hunting trip gone horribly wrong.

18 meteres is like 60 feet, I'm actually surprised that all he broke was his legs, from that height probably at least one leg had a compound fracture.

Throwing a rope UP 60 feet from inside a well (no dimensions given) would be a tough task ever for a man in perfect health.

Very sad, Depending on gadgets is one thing, having a hunting partner would have likely had him rescued within hours

Better yet a hunting partner with gadgets.

this is very sad and i dont know the answer to what could have helped besides a hunting partner but i do hope some more ideas are thrown around that could aid someone in the future...=(

Not sure if the three shot rule works in spain or not since he did have a shotgun..

Still a danged shame...:( If folks would've been given a clue as to where he was going and when he'd return, it might have turned out different... Similar to having a hunting buddy..

His main asset would have been his shotgun. I think there are signal flairs and screetchers for shotguns that could possibly have helped.

It's another case of maintaining will. He'd have been found in 10 days which is certainly conceivably survivable if he had a little food and water. depending on how bad his legs were I guess. Very grim.

That is sad. Like stated above, you really would have needed somebody else to be there in order to help you. Throwing a rope out of a 60 foot hole that can't be all that wide, with broken legs among other bruises, has to be damn near impossible. Really is sad though, another day of waiting and he may have been rescued. Crazy how things work out.

Sad story, drives home the importance of telling people the when/where/how long of your trips.

A rope wouldn't be much good once you're at the bottom, unless you had a grappling hook and room to throw it up (my wife's idea, not bad). Could you climb out with a pair of spikes or sturdy knives jammed into the walls as hand-holds? (Maybe I need a couple of those Busse's after all.) With broken legs, you'd have to have some arm strength (or adrenaline) to pull yourself out either way, especially 18 meters. The most practical thing would be a few hand-held flares like I used to keep on the boat. You just have to hope someone sees it. A phone of any type would be useless that deep.

I can't imagine what he experienced to drive him to that final step, very tragic.

(Edited to add: One thought about the flare, you'd better make sure it gets out of the hole! Sitting at the bottom with a lit flare banging around would make a bad spot worse all right...)

what a sad event. I cannot even begin to imagine the thoughts going thru his mind the final few hours. sad.

This incident reminded me that I'd heard of walkers falling into abandoned mine shafts in the UK, and discovered this, which happened just 150 yards from the family home!

too bad there weren't some logs down in the bottom, or a stout walking stick.

he might've made a primitve ascender rig.

sometimes your number is just up.

he went on his own terms.

like skimo said, the best thing he or anyone in this situation could have had would be a hunting buddy. very sad story.

I think that the one thing he needed was a positive attitude. It is very sad to hear about someone giving up like that only to be found a few days later. No matter what has happened one should always have the hope that they will be found.

Well it should work since its an international distress signal, but im not sure many people would recognize it for what it is.

Poor fella, it must have been a real bad way to go.

That's why I shake my head when people head out alone. It's a shame and quite common.
We had 3 disappear here so far this year.....that I heard about. Probably more.

You couldn't throw the rope. Remove the shot from a shell. Knot the rope for a packed fit and shove it down the bore. At the 4 foot mark or so tie a rock or stick into it.BOOM
Rope up.
One problem. Nobody up top to tie it. I suppose a "V" stick notched and tied on one leg might grab ahold of something.
Due to the pain, even a super strong person probably couldn't climb out.
I can climb all day with just my arms but not with 2 broken legs.
Another reason to have a few Vicadin in the first aid kit.

Never go to the woods alone.I used to, all of the time, until my brain matured about age 40.
