After searching on the forum I found references and the link to didymium glasses for UV light. Is this something that most people wear? Is this for someone that forges all the time, or is this something you need only if you gaze at the fire all the time? Is this for only certain type of forges?

thank you.

I don't think UV is too much of a concern with a forge fire (carbon based; UV absorber). Now, with a hydrogen fire it would be, but if you're firing your forge with hydrogen then we need to talk.

IR is a concern, but any good tinted or lightly mirrored safety glasses will knock that right nout.

I wear them. It takes a little getting use to with the color change of the blade and the forge. In my opinion it helps with the amount of my eye irritation after forging.

Nail struck on the head, most of what hurts your eyes is IR. It's also what makes your skin warm even when far back. A coal or propane flame produces little UV, and the chamber temperature isn't hot enough to emit appreciable UV rays.
