Diesel drivers........Why do people do this??

Its the search for significance. "Look at me, I have a big truck with exhaust stacks sticking up out of the bed." Goth kids do the same thing with black eyeliner, dyed hair and trench coats. Tweener chicks do it with skanky clothes and body piercing. 25 year old guys who work in manual labor do it with unintelligible Asian symbol tats. I do it with superintelligence, humility, Godliness and incredibly sexy looks.

At the time I was shopping, it was the diesels that had a horrible reputation. Lawsuits back and forth between the engine manufacturer and Ford, lawsuits from ambulance companies, friends with blown diesels and very expensive repair bills... Not to mention the standard diesel problems - smell, noise, smoke, price, cost of fuel, cost of maintenance...
The first year or two the V10 had some reliability issues related to the spark plug threading. A non-issue after that.

Back when my truck was made, the V8 was underpowered, especially for climbing hills at 75mph at this elevation. The V10 was dropped from the line only when the new V8 engine was released; the new V8 has more power than my V10.

I've had it about six years now. It's held it's value (according to NADA) very well, and it's had a few standard maintenance items pop up but nothing that I'd consider a design defect. Battery, brakes, starter, oil changes. It's now 11 years old and still looks like new too.

Glad to hear it's been good. The 6.0 was a definite piece of crap, but the one I use has had the bugs worked out, lol. It'll hit 200k by July I think. When you've got a trailer attached to the back, permanently, the diesel makes so much more sense. The 7.3L was the one to get, no doubt. Ideal truck - F250, 12v Cummins and an Allison trans. :D

It's the only brand of truck I'd buy that isn't a Toyota. ;) My dad's '09 Ram is getting a new engine, and I don't do GM.

The V10 makes zero sense, IMO. Worse mileage than a gas V8, less torque than a Diesel. Less reliable than all of them combined. :D Or perhaps that was Ford's Triton V10, lol.

Just ribbing ya a bit. I think the idea of the thread is about the posers that drive em cause they can. The guys that will never haul a thing or tow anything. Kind of the opposite end of the guys with the civics with the muffler the size of the back seat sticking out a foot from under the bumper.

My work truck is an 02 F-250 with the 7.3
I have put 273,000 miles on it and it still runs strong today. After driving this truck for so long, I don't think I could ever own anything but a diesel. The power is amazing. The only mod I have done is installed the "safe tow" tune and that made a huge difference in performance and mileage. If I drive like a normal person it gets twenty miles to the gallon all day long.

A lot of scumbags here in Florida do this so they can "roll coal", which is about the biggest flag you can wave if you want the rest of the world to know what a huge douche-bro you are.

Yes. Goddamn I hate that shit. It still eludes me why so many truck enthusiasts have to be huge douche bags. I am not saying they all are, and I like trucks myself.... but it seems to be a trend with them amongst certain people. Like many car groups as well, however with trucks it seems much more prevalent.

It's definitely not a new thing, unless you live in Ohio - where everything is 'new' a few years after it's new. :D

I drive an F350 with a 6.0 PSD on occasion, and it's awesome! No stacks - I wouldn't bother with stacks. Just a regular-ass 5" exhaust does the trick.

Yeah and the guys from Michigan are like a year behind the people in Ohio.

It's like a mental illness in which people demand the attention of strangers.

aka, Showoff Douchebaggery.

385 H.P/850 ft. lbs of torque, and the exhaust is where it is supposed to be... :D

I don't get it. It looks moronic, takes up space in the bed and sounds horrible.

Yep...

That sums it up.
I happen to prefer my V10 engine. Less noise than most 700cc motorcycles riding around, no visible exhaust or smell, and starts like a dream even at -20 degrees F.

Get a Dodge :D. They will start at -27F even when they aren't plugged in. My 02 did it numerous times, and my 13 and 14 did too...
I work with a couple guys that have Fords, and those damn things have to be plugged in even when it isn't below freezing, and they sound like a school bus lol

A Ram will rust to pieces up here - my father's came from the factory with rusty fenders, lol (currently at dealership getting an engine replacement). Now that Cummins is no longer available in the RAM, you might have to buy a Nissan instead!! :D

The first guy to ever do it had an interesting idea to make his daily driver look different and with a nod to the trucks that made America what it was.

The scads of follower/posers that did it after the first guy added stacks were just sheep following the heard.

As for the chipping and running excessively rich to produce the smoke...that is something a little further down the line. I heard a group proclaiming that they "roll coal" as a means of protesting environmentally conscious behavior. I gotta laugh every time I hear logic like this. (I am sure they are convert a lot of people to their ideals with such behavior).

If the Ram is rust proofed and maintained, they will last almost as long as a Ford, but not quite.

Just rolled through the Bakken yesterday and I gotta say- I think I found ground zero for this type of behavior.

My guess is its mostly about status and ego..when everyone has a lifted 1 ton you gotta take it to the next level if you want to peacock accordingly.

Now add in a under 30 yr old male with too much money and no responsibilities and boom you have the perfect recipe for conspicuous consumption.

I've seen a few trucks around with stacks and "rolling coal". The selfish ignorance is disgusting. I've heard it's a way to protest environmentalism as well, but we regularly have air quality warnings recommending people stay indoors, and driving downtown from the north in the morning you can see the blanket of smog covering the city...

I think powernoodle and Bob W summed it up nicely.

Don't know where you heard that, but that isn't true. Cummins is alive and well in Ram pickups..

Nice truck 338375.

Thank you

Interesting. All I've been hearing about is how Dodge severed relations with Cummins, but I see the 6.7 available on the website. Interesting. It's a nice truck, no doubt. It just wouldn't be my first choice.

Driver fender has been replaced twice. it's an '09. The passenger side has only been replaced once.

The front, top left 'crosshair' was tarnished off the factory floor, too. The front and rear bumper were also replaced due to rust, under warranty.

This side fell off, two years ago. Lol.

It went into the dealer to get a trans, but is currently undergoing an engine replacement. :p

I bought a Dodge once. Despite the excellent power and traction, it's a mistake I'm not likely to repeat. Out of the nine months I owned it, it was in the shop 55 days. The first week was u-joints, ball joints, drag link, and steering column. Then the back end. Then the engine (not entirely Dodge's fault on that one). Entire computer/electronics component replaced. Radiator had a hundred holes from a faring that had broke loose. Doors were falling off. Windows leaked when it rained. Glove box fell off. Some reoccurring and never-resolved problem with it not starting when hot. And it left several different colors behind when parked in the snow.

There are people with similar experiences, then there are those that 'have never had a problem!' Your mileage will likely vary [greatly]. :p
The trucks look great, and I love the 5.7. I don't love what goes along with it. Ours also had the rear axle failure that is/was common. Luckily that one happened when the service manager at the dealership was driving the truck. :D

A friend of mine has a regular cab, short bed, 4x2 with the 5.7. He's on his 3rd rear end.
