Difference between Spyder Ladybugs?

Hello friends...

First of all, I tried to search a similar thread, but I couldn´t find it.

I intend to give a Spyderco Ladybug to my girl, as a gift (and maybe pick one for my keychain too... hehehe). But I have some doubts and maybe you guys can help me... Until now, I only have Enduras and Delicas, and know nothing about Ladybugs...

1 - What´s the difference between the VG-10 and H1 steel ? I mean, we will not use those ladybugs in saltwater enviroment, and we don´t live near the ocean... Which steel should I get, and why? Maybe H1 is better, even if it will not be used in saltwater? What do you think?

2- Is there any difference in that new Spyderco Ladybug PURPLE FRN handle? I´m asking because I saw the name "Light" in some e-stores... It´s written: "Spyderco Ladybug LIGHT - Purple FRN". What is this "light"? The other versions (black or white handle) don´t have this "light" in the name....

Well, that´s it. If you guys can, I would love a picture where I can compare it´s size with something as a perspective.

Thanks for all! Greetings from Brasil!

The "light" refers to it being a Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon (FRN) handle rather than the all-stainless steel model. They don't always mention it since there are more lightweight models than heavy ones.

In my opinion, VG-10 is a better steel overall than H-1, but with H-1 you don't ever have the problem of losing the edge to corrosion, even if the knife sits for years with no care. For a keychain knife, it probably doesn't matter, but if you decide to put a long chain on it and wear it like a necklace, the H-1 will not rust.

Depends on the gal. Does she try to match everything? Does she have a favorite color? Does she like serrations ;) Would she rather receive a SS SE Cricket with special lazer engraving?

I have a preference of H1 serrations to VG-10 serrations and a preference for VG-10 Plain Edge over H1 plain edge. These preferences are based on my experience strictly with edge retension.

Yablanowitz is right on with the answer to your light question. Lightweight aka FRN handle material.

Good luck.

I've seen more light purple tan dark purple Lbugs. It's like a lavenderish color. I'd go with VG10 if you're not gunna be anywhere near water. VG10 is already pretty corrosion resistant already.

VG-10 is on or above par with 440C and S30V for corrosion resistance. H1 tops all though. ;)

H1's edge holding is about on par with AUS-8, while VG-10 is straddling the midline between ATS-34/154CM and S30V.

IF you are not worried at all about rust resistance, then get the vg-10 steel as I find in my use it takes a keener edge and holds it well. I think that its cheaper than the salt as well

VG-10 seems to hold a great edge. However, I actually prefer H-1 as a general EDC and work knife. It takes a great edge, holds it pretty well, is easy to sharpen, and requires zero maintenance. A week of wading in the ocean did absolutely nothing to the edge of my Tasman Salt.

Doing my daily newgraham poke around, I saw that they had a couple H-1 Ladybugs in stock...I couldn't help myself:D We'll see how I like it on Friday when the brown truck drops it off:thumbup:

Thanks for the answers...

I guess I´ll get one purple VG-10 (plain edge) for her, and a white VG-10 (spyder edge) for me.

I always clean our knives, and we don´t live near the ocean, so I guess VG-10 is a better choice.

It will be our firsts Ladybugs. I´m anxious to see them!

Really ??

When ?

Maybe I´ll get this one too, in a near future... hehehe.

I saw a lot of pics on the net about red, blue, orange... are they limited editions ?

I love the orange and yellow handle!
