Difference between Zytel and Zyex specifically on the CS Ti Lite

T, L and X.

I'm sure there is some difference, but I doubt it will make any difference from an end user perspective, honestly. Good luck on the search, though.

Looks like Zy-Ex equals glass-fiber zytel:

Zyex is the trade name for a high temperature, engineering grade polymer known as polyetheretherketone, or PEEK. According to the online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, "Polyketones are a family of high-performance thermoplastic polymers. The highly polar ketone groups in the polymer backbone of these materials gives rise to a strong attraction between polymer chains, which increases the material's melting point. Such materials also tend to resist solvents and have good mechanical properties."

If you ever find yourself thinking Zytel isn't strong enough for a knife handle, ask yourself why gun manufacturers make handguns out of the stuff . . .

Cold Steel changed their marketing on a few items:

Zytel became Zy-Ex
Grivory became Griv-Ex
Kraton became Kray-Ex

Either they're making their own versions of these materials, or want to give the impression the materials are Cold Steel exclusive (I think the latter is more likely).

Whichever is true, I don't think there is any appreciable difference.

Hahaha,

Yaaaahhhh I know what you mean. I was just curious. Looking at the on line company info of the MAKERS of the material it sounds like some pretty stable and strong stuff for 'plastic". I mean they make musical instrument strings out of some version of these and they are RESPECTED for their quality of sound. That's pretty strong and stable.

I'm just wondering if maybe, for example, if say Zyex has better grip texture than the (older ?) Zytel or some other tactile diff.

Thanks for responding though.

PS: seems like I remember the older Zytel Ti Lites were polished blade and the new ones are grit blasted. So that could be a marker for a better or worse knife version without actually making a diff in how well the handle functions.

or some shtuff . . .

Ah, Zy-Ex is just CS's name for a particular glass fiber Zytel compound. Zy-ex (tm) not Zyex.

Again, strong enough to make guns from so I'm sure it's plenty strong for ti-lite handle or whatever.

What the hell is grivory, though?

THAT makes sense. For sure.
Thanks

Do you have any from when they were called the older name to compare to the new version of the name ?

or just thoughts on the finish of the plastic old to new ? I am about to buy another Cold Steel Ti Lite IV and wondering if the older one is as good grip wise as the newer. Honestly I don't care about the blade finish because it will be on the grinder, probably before the first day is out after I get it.

Another PPA (Polyphthalamide) used by CS on their folders, like the Rajah's handles

I like it as much as FRN, and almost as much as G10

Oh, I love the stuff. They make the handle of my favorite CS knives, the Tuff Lite, out of it and I know from experience how well the stuff works--I have beat on those knives like no other at this point. Though I guess they're not made of grivory anymore, now they're made of Griv-Ex (tm) or whatever. ;)
