Difference in steel

S110V has twice as much carbon, more than twice as much vanadium, a bunch of other elements that S30V does not have, and costs considerably more. This chart will show you their compositions.

I know S110V will hold a working edge for a very long time but can be difficult to sharpen without the correct tools (diamond rods). S30V is a good all around steel that was designed for the cutlery industry.

S30V is a very good steel. You will not be disappointed with it.
With my experience, it seems to hold a sharper edge a little longer than S110V but is easier to sharpen. If I wasn't curious about some different steels I would be carrying S30V.

So I should be very happy with S30V in my next Spyderco.

You should be very happy with s30v. I too prefer it to s110v in edc knives. Easier to bring to high level sharpness and the difference in edge retention is not all that noticeable to me. One area where s110v definitely has an advantage though is corrosion resistance. Not that s30v is terrible in that area, but s110v is outstanding. Unless you are in a really harsh environment though, you shouldn't have any trouble with either.

You'll love s30v!!
I have an s30v Millie that I use as a work knife. I keep that thang satan sharp!!
I installed a 75 gallon water heater few weeks ago. It came in a HUGE & THICK cardboard box. I cut that thing into little pieces.......a LOT OF LITTLE PIECES!!
Got home and figured I'd have to sharpen it up.......it STILL sliced phone book paper!! Spydie knows how to hook up s30v!!
You will love it!!
Joe

Thanks. I just ordered a Delica and that doesn't have S30V. So maybe my next Spyderco.

VG-10 is a nice affordable steel, S30V is a step up from that. None are hard to sharpen with some experience.

you could look into the Para 2 for your next spydie, the endure and para2 are staple knives for spyderco I'd think. both excellent!

Don't worry, you will love the Delica, too. I assume it is a standard model. Many of us prefer this as a drop in the pocket EDC knife.

Hey guys, i have a question. This thread has me a bit concerned. I use a Worksharp Ken Onion as my primary sharpener. I have a Manix in S110V on order. Do you guys think the Worksharp will be up to the task of sharpening the blade even without it being a diamond sharpener?

Yeah, it will work ok. I don't really care for the device or the type of edge it gives but it will sharpen s110v no problem. Be very careful or you will round off all your tips.

I'm always careful with it and haven't rounded a tip yet.

I'm a huge fan of "the device" and I like convex edges, but that's another issue for another thread. No need to derail the OPs thread more than necessary.

Many people like it and many folks like a convex edge...I am just not one of them. There was no insult intended at all. It is a device though. :)

I didn't take any insult at all. Sorry if it came across that way.
I just found it humorous to refer to the WS as "the device." I think that may be my new name for it.

Guess I'll go against the grain, but all opinions are different. I don't like S30V much. It's no junk steel, but when really comparing and nit pickling, it's one of the last SS I would choose. I'd take VG-10 over it all day, and S110V seems no harder to sharpen than S30V. I've had many S30V knives with edge stability issues. Don't know if it's my usage style or what, but multiple knives and the same knife after a reprofiling even. S110V has shown no such issues in my mule in the kitchen and in me Manix2. It's easy to touch up and I re-profiled both. My favorite SS is XHP. It may not hold its working edge as long as S30V, but it's holds its razor edge for a good while. It's kind of like a juiced up VG-10 IMO.

As for the work sharp, I bought the regular one, rounded one tip and never touched a knife to it again. It stays in the garage and sees plenty of use on lawn mower blades and random outdoor tools. Money well spent, but the Sharp Maker and Edge Pro combo is far superior for me.

I do not have a lot of S30V expirience. I used a bit my original Native in 2005-2006. But I used S35Vn N5 for a while. I also like VG10 more than S30V and S35Vn. I love sharp edges, not working edge. Since summer of 2013 my Forum Native is my most used knife. Within last year I used it a lot to brake boxes down and cut fiberglass reinforced tape. I like it a lot. In my expirience S110V is holding edge much longer than S35Vn. It takes me the same time to touch-up on sharpmaker either VG10 or S35Vn or S110V. When it comes time for reprofiling without of doubts S110V takes at least twice longer, but I do not do this often and usually watching some movie during S110V reprofiling. I never tried XHP though.

Give XHP a shot. It feels the most like a non SS as any SS I've tried. If you desire you can reprofie a beautiful polished edge too. Sounds like we look for the same things in a steel, and if so you need some XHP. There was a brown LW Native in XHP, just saying[emoji6]
