Since I have some knives made with different steels, I thought of posting them together to show the differences in the resulting patterns according to the types of steels used.

Top knife is a Nessmuk made of stainless 304 and stainless 416, with a D2 core: stainless san mai.

Medium blade is carbon 1070, stainless 304, with a 5160 core: half stainless san mai.

Bottom scalpel is carbon 1010, carbon 1070, with a 5160 core: carbon san mai.

You can clearly see the differences on the union lines depending if all stainless, carbon/stainless or all carbon steels have been used.

Thanks for looking!

Really cool looking knives Ariel. Thanks for sharing. I'm looking to try the stainless 304 and stainless 416, with a D2 core combination. What type of flux are you using?

Eric

Ariel, Could you please please post a short how to on making the D2 San mai. I have a bunch of 3/16 D2 and have been thinking of something similar. Another question is can I forge weld say 15n20/1095 damascus to the sides of the D2. or even something like 1018-15n20. Thanks. I know you are a busy guy with lots going on and have already posted more than your share. No hurry and will understand if you never have the time. Thanks for all you have posted Jim

I will make a tutorial on making 304/416 with a 440C core soon, it's the exact same method I use for D2.

You shouldn't have a problem with any of those combinations if you use a cannister with the paper/kerosene trick.

Ariel

Thank you. I love damascus and I love D2. Really like the stuff you been posting. The D2 core knife is great all over. Blade, spacers, butt cap, everything.
