Different Izula steel ?

An Izula would certainly be awesome in stainless. H1 steel anyone? Not likely though..

And H1 wouldn't be too appropriate. I have a Pacific Salt, and regarding edge retention, it's not that great. You can leave it lying in saltwater though.

H1 kinda sucks at first, but it does work-harden pretty well. I'd gauge it a bit better than Aus8, which isn't great compared to some steels but is certainly no slouch.

Another benefit of H1 is it'll take a lot of abuse--it'll take more prying force than a lot of stainless. Gotta love those nitrogen bonds

id love to see a different steeled izula, maybe aus 8 or similar. something that will not rust easy. i live maybe 2 miles from the beach and our humidity levels in sc are often in the 90%. so my blades are very prone to rust. maybe 154 cm or s30v would also be great options

I am with Nemo on this one based on my own experience.

However I will take RAT's word for it if they decide to make their knife using D2 or any other steel and say that it is just as good.

Hey Stoffi I bet if you reprofile that Izula to 10 degrees per side it would slice more like the knives from your country.

I do that with all my knives and I'm much happier carving wood with them than the edges they leave the factory with.

I know they have some sort of SS (440C) project in the works, for summertime 2010. Not sure WHICH model they are doing, or if it will be a totally new design. I am very happy with the RAT's I have so far, but I may grab a SS blade for when I am around the water a lot.

I hope the new model is a mariners blade :D complete with marlin spike. Be good to have a purpose made rat to take sailing.

I think Stainless would be great. D2, 440C, AUS8 are all good. But I think the best would be 154CM.

An Izula in H1 with a fully serrated blade would be an amazing sailing knife. I know the H1 is expensive, but I love my H1 spyderco folders. The work hardening is only a problem if you don't use the knife.

And A Izula with a lightsaber blade will be great also.

But seriously. H1 seems to be a Japan speciality. Do you think you want a japanese Izula ? Is your Izula scared of the ocean ? Mine is not and won't rust with that strong coating.
And for serrations and H1 there is already a company with a lot of choice and a hole in the blade :D...

I dont see the point in making a small fixed blade with thinner steel and stainless. So many folding knives fit this role already. I see fixed blades as your tough go to blades.

Mmm, good point; but, if you carve with a folder, eventually the blade will start to wiggle. They're not really made for that purpose alone. There is too much force in woodcarving for a folder to remain solid after extended use.

My grand fathers, my father, my father in law were carving with slip joint folders... I guess they were less clumsy than modern people... Or their 20 dollars folding knives were stronger than modern tactical folders ?;)

For a stainless Izula I would fall all over myself to buy one in 12c27, because it is a clean, fine grained steel that resists rust well. It also takes a fantastic edge.

Yeah my suggestion was somewhat speculative, and I realize that H1 is a bit of a Japanese specialty. If it had to be made in Japan for me to get H1, I would have absolutely no problem with that. As stated I own several spyderco H1 folders, so a little SEKI stamp (or whatever) isn't exactly gonna bother me.

I have not yet had my izula around salt water (I got it a few weeks ago), Have you? I brought a Kershaw Outcast (D2) to Kauai last winter, and while it's strong coating did stop rust from forming on the blade, the uncoated edge was a rusted mess after just one afternoon in the jungle.

And I am aware that spyderco makes a blade to fit my needs, in my post I state that I have several H1 folders. I realize that spyderco makes a few H1 fixed blades as well, however how many of them are the size and design of the izula? I'm well aware that there are other choices for a serrated and heavily corrosion resistant knife, however there is enough that I like about the izula that I want an izula in some sort of stainless with serrations.
