Different knife brands made in the same factory

This question isn't manufacturer specific, so I thought I'd post here:

IIRC, I've heard some CRKT and some Cold Steel, were made in the same factory in China, and the person I heard it from (who I'd like to keep anonymous because he is pretty famous in the knife world) and I may not have all my facts straight, but the way I remember it, (tho its a bit cloudy), may have included some Spyderco or Byrd and some Benchmade.

It's also something I'm sure those knife brands don't go around advertising.

Anyone here know the real scoop? Or about other knife companies made in the same factory?
Thanks

I have a strong suspicion that the Browning Ice-storm is made in the MCusta factory.

Jos, I've read that myself, that Mcusta does a lot of Browning's knives.

I don't know about China, but Seki City factories must have been sharing American contracts for years. :)

Weird posts. Full moon.

Aside from that, I'm not sure that I see the importance of whether two knife companies both have contracts with a single factory in Japan, Taiwan, China, or Italy. My experience with subcontracting parts out is that, while the supplier is important, so are the terms of the contract and the working relationship you have with that supplier. It is possible to have two contracts for similar items (add: with a single supplier) , yet the quality of the items differs because of the requirements written into the contracts.

The one I have is very close to the Mcusta Stingray which I gave to my father last xmas.

My Spyderco Kiwi is made in Japan, but I don't know by which company.

I didn't know it was a secret. Mass-production knives, like anything nowadays are made in specialized factories in China that have typically won a 'bid' to manufacture them. Awarding the bid to a China, Taiwan, Japan company depends on both cost per-piece as well as level of quality that can be maintained. It is not unusual for 2 or more brands to be made right next to each other on a production line.

Shh...don't tell anyone, but all of your computers come out of 2 factories in China. Whether it's Dell, HP/CompaQ, Sony, Gateway, even Apple. Just different components and levels of QC.

I think Apple still has some of its stuff built in Malaysia.

Esav's warning did not seem to work. Maybe an infraction will convince you.:thumbdn:

As far as the subject.

Well that type of thing has been going on in the knife industry for over 100 years.

When Camillus (R.I.P) was still up and running they made knives for S&W, and some other companies. And me too, i have a weird feeling browning and MCusta have a connection...

Camillus made Buck folders (30x series) until I think it was the '90's.

I'd heard from "persons close to the production" that during the later days of Viet Nahm - both USA Gerber and Buck knives were made in the same US factory - never verified by probably true as were tales of how the ancestory of the R.W. Case family shared craftsmen and equipment at one point in the early 1900's -

Rumor has it that Buck made some of the old Cold Steel knives. Rumor also has it that BladeTech made the Rat-trap folder for Swamp Rat. I believe Fox Cutlery makes knives for several different companies, as does Rowen Manufacturing, the one that makes the Rat Cutlery line of knives. Moki, in Japan, has manufactured knives for Spyderco, Al Mar, and others, in addition to making their own line.

They also made some of the carbon v knives (like the Recon Tanto, SRK etc) for Cold Steel before they were changed to AUS8.
