For all those who have the fine and ultra fine white ceramic sharpeners, how do you remember which one is which? Where do you store your extra rods? Organization methods?

It's funny but they look so similar that I wonder if I could even tell the difference between fine and ultra fine to know that I didn't just get a second pair of regular fine stones. The ultra fine triangles come with red paint on one end to identify them, correct? Does it wash off or is that just how you know which is which?

One way is to put a "nick" in one of the ends of a flat with a diamond sharpener.

Worked with me, since even "permanent" marker wears away.

What I do is keep the med and fine rods stored in the Sharpmaker base and the ultra-fine rods I leave in the individual tubes that they came in. I find that I can feel the difference between them by dragging a fingernail along one of the corners.

I store my grey rods in the tubes that the U/F rods came in because I rarely use them. The UF and F rods stay in the Sharpmaker since they get most of the use. My U/F rods came with red painted ends and I've just kept that going ever since I got them. The F rods are bare white.

My UF rods have a red sort of dye on one end. Pretty fool proof to tell them apart.

The red dye does wear off and it is difficult to tell the difference without it. I doubt most people could tell the difference without the markings; you are trying to feel a difference of around 3 microns with your fingers. I think I finally got it right, but I based my decision on a faint twinge of red at the end of the rod more than on feel. Red ink is easy to touch up and I recommend doing before disaster strikes.
