Difficult choice for edc knife

It is unusual in Canada to get an edc knife in your pocket. I don’t know anyone who does.

I just came across this comment, and I am wondering what you mean? Are you saying people in Canada do not EDC knives???? (You are completely mistaken, if that is what you meant.)

And Para 3 is the correct answer.

I love civivi and WE so am biased with them, but for an EDC that can tackle almost any task, the Para 3 is great

While I'm currently waiting in suspense to see the picture...

I sometimes wonder about this. I've had a pretty wide variety of knives over the years. Some definitely seem more robust than others but at the end of the day, they are still folding knives. I treat them as such. Any task that would test things like lock strength or overall structural integrity is just not a task I'm going to ask of a folding knife.

Obviously, a lock should lock up solidly and there shouldn't be any glaring issues with a knife's basic structural integrity. So long as we are comparing folding knives of reasonable quality though, that should never be in question. Spyderco and WE definitely make quality knives. Spyderco, WE, and Kizer make up most of my EDC rotation at this point. I don't know that "ruggedness" has ever caused me to pick one over the other for regular EDC.

Aspects that matter more to me tend to be ergonomics, edge retention, corrosion resistance, and less strictly practical things like looks or a sweet action. One thing that still gets me is that I can be more reluctant to use a pretty knife. That means an FRN Spyderco is always good to go where a pristine titanium framelock might stay on the shelf.

I'm with Chronovore, there is no reasonable Venn diagram that gives someone a nice, reasonable EDC kind of knife and also makes an AD-10 look svelte.

Also I keep seeing comments every once in awhile that imply that Civivis are somehow dainty and inappropriately light in the build. I don't get it, for a decade the forums have been loaded with (legitimate) griping about production knives with prybar stock and hatchet grinds, now we get a good manufacturer that engineers their knives to get us top shelf cutting tools in the budget range, and we call them frail.

Lol, come on fellas, .010" for a daily carry is good, a thin grind rocks, and if we need a prybar why are we shopping for purpose built EDC cutters

I keep an eye on new releases. I routinely see a design I like only to find out it has a blade thickness of 0.15 or 0.16". That usually results in me passing. Yes, some of those knives are still ground to get reasonably thin behind the edge. Some taper out nicely to have sections that are more in line with what I like in an EDC folder. Other times though, that thickness is still contributing weight, working as a wedge where I don't want one, and generally boosting the starting point past where it needs to be.

So long as the grind is good, I'm much happier with thinner stock in an EDC folder. I don't need it to get down to Delica or Chaparral thickness, but I'm okay if it does. I've been pretty happy with knives I've carried in the 0.10-0.12" range.

As far as prying, scraping, turning screws, and other things that aren't really knife jobs; there are other tools for those tasks. I usually carry a pliers-based multi-tool. Prying is a little different though... I don't need to pry things very often but as I've been exploring the world of pocket organizers, I've recently warmed up to the idea of titanium pry tools. I'm still pretty early into that journey but I'm curious to see how well they do.

They are all good quality blades…
Choose the one that turns you on visually,,,eyecandy appeal…and you will be happy.

Yes I was kinda wondering about the Canada comment. Lots of people EDC knives, fixed or folding.

And I too would probably go Para 3

Agreed. The only time I wouldn't carry a knife is if I'm planning on going into a restricted space (like an airport, concert/sports arena, or legislature building), where security really don't want you to be carrying a knife and might take it away. That said, even people who carry knives a lot probably aren't going to carry a BK-2 to a job interview.

True the situation does dictate how this is handled but for the vast majority of time EDC knife carrier is very doable.

Hi guys! There is the picture of the knife I just received this morning. I choose the new Benchmade Bugout Aluminium with M390 steel. It was a difficult choice between this knife and a Black Para3 with a carbon fibre custom scale. I know the blade length is more than 3 inches but I fall in love when I saw this knife.

About Canadians not wearing edc knives It’s because I don’t know anyone here in the Province of Quebec or in BC wearing an edc knife. I’m just like an alien because I always get an edc knife on me. I feel nude without my knife. It was nothing negative.

Thanks you for your help everyone. You’re a very helpful community.

While I wouldn’t choose any of those as my edc (I have big hands) given the choices I’d go with the Para 3, toss some aftermarket carbon fiber scales on it, titanium hardware and a deep carry clip and call it a day…..but that’s just me.

I was going to recommend a Bugout of your choosing, and slight shortening to meet local legal requirement. You picked a great version! Congrats.

I'd go micarta or TeroTuf, but otherwise:

all of this.

Could go with any victorinox that has a beer or can opener. Thin blade stock for slicing and you can also do some prying with the other tools

I am Canadian and EDC cutting tools, and see many others who do as well. I even question your second sentence. Just because you don't see it, or have not had a conversation about it doesn't mean that people you know are not discreetly carrying an EDC knife.

It's a bit like carry guns in the United States. While it varies regionally, lots of people EDC them. The majority of those that do carry them concealed. So many people have no idea that the person behind them in line at the grocery store or standing next to them on an elevator is armed. That avoids awkwardness with anti-gun people or "triggering" those who are afraid of guns. It also creates a situation where would-be criminals don't know which potential victims are armed and I think that's a good thing.

There are TENS of THOUSANDS of people in BC and Quebec that EDC knives. There are no laws in Canada that prohibit EDC assuming they are not push daggers or assist-operated (switchblades).

BC in particular in one of the most knife-friendly provinces there is.

I would go with the Para 3 or the Banter. I really dislike Benchmade due to issues with QC and broken springs over and over again.

There are a ton of people carrying EDC knives in Quebec and BC, otherwise House of Knives wouldn't be such a thriving business, but people are generally not cruising the malls with a belt knife. What and how you carry has more to do with where you are and the company you keep. Even in a crowd of skittish, cappuccino sucking city dwelling office workers you would be surprised how many of them are packing steel. The fact that they're not proudly/legally displaying their knives doesn't mean they're not carrying them. A lot of blue collar types also need them for work.

My most current edc list;
Benchmade Valet
WE Vapor
Benchmade Mini-Bugout
and the CRK Mnandi that is on order.
All are very slim, light, and carry razor-sharp blades.
