Got my digital thermometer from omega today and did a little test real quick with my curent heat treat setup. before it was just a guessing game as to how hot it was inside the brick , but now i know. it gets damn hot in there with mapp gas. i know now for a fact that i was WAY over heating my o1. with a new bottle from the time u turn valve on and get lightable gas its like 1 turn to get it to 1500 f, i was slightly shocked that it got so hot so fast. but good equipment like this meter helps u see the errors u can make buy guessing things like temp. Cant wait for this weekend when i can do a quality , accurate soak on some o1 blades i have profiled.

how much was your "digital thermometer from omega " and do you have a web site for it.

folx,

for about $100 you should be able to buy:

- properly shielded K-type thermocouple that would measure temps to 2200F
- PID controller, that you can program to desired temp, that would read the TC and control an external valve to get to and HOLD @ that temperature, within few F.
- proper valve that can be controlled via PID controller

I had some pretty detailed posts on it here and on deja.com, if you
want to know more about particular models etc

When searching eBay for those controllers, make sure to look up the specs of them to make sure they will cover the range of, and use type K thermocouples.
There are quite a few on there that will only go up to a few hundred degrees, such as ones used for temperature control of chambers and refrigeration...

JT, just google omega and it wil come up they have a huge website with so many different metering devices. u can get one for 55 dollars on up to several hundreds for the smaller handhelds. the one i got has a dual k thermocouples and came with 2 of them was around 80 dollars. i know they not the best k type ones and i will pony up for some better ones but they work for now.
