Dilemma. Do I use this "new to me" knife or keep it stashed away?

I have varying degrees of use so just about all my knives get carried. If you know it’s gonna be an easy day and you can get away with simple cutting chores go for it and carry it. Gonna be repairing the truck and cutting stuff that you know will scratch and tear up the blade, carry something else.
Spot on!!

I sold a grail knife that was just too nice for me to use clearing trails and carrying in the woods. I decided then that I would not buy any knives that I would not use. If that knife makes you happy to take it out, open it, and use it- then carry it. If you don’t abuse it, most likely it will still be in great shape to pass it down. Carry a second blade for the nasty stuff and carry that blade too! Just my .02
Enjoy it regardless.

Stag is more durable than bone, carry it but don’t abuse it. I laugh at myself sometimes; have a $500 knife and don’t use it, but buy a $45K pickup and scratch the bed all up carrying tools, etc. Buy a $50K boat and run it in salt water, but preserve the $500.00 dollar knife! OH
Ps I took that new Randall out about ten years ago and skinned a deer with it, got a nice deer blood patina on the blade - in the end my life never changed.

"Who are you saving it for?" a famous quote from KathyJo..I would absolutely make that my DUC (dress up carry). I'm sure you have more than one knife and that is too nice NOT to use! And as far as passing it down to the kids I'm sure they would much rather have one you actually carried and used versus just one more that would probably go in a yard sale lolo! Pride in using a nice tool has value too.

Very nice knife.

Sometimes I carry 2 knives. One for show and cutting packages. Another that I would use if I needed a knife in a pinch. To work on or fix something...

Always the chance of losing it, which I have done on occasion.

Well said.

Someone saved it for you (and us) to admire. Consider doing the same. I would use it to open letters that's about it. But I have others to use.

a very smart woman. I've stolen that phrase to remind myself who am I saving it for.......I get stuck sometimes on saving stuff......

I decided to use it as my desk knife for opening letters and opening packages. Used it for the first time to open mail this week.

I also decided that I'm going to order up a Custom shop Elk handle 501 in S30V in the very near future and use that for my primary daily carry. That way, I'll have a horn handled 501 to leave to each of my two kiddos.

I really like the size of the 501 and I'm a big fan of the drop point blade (mainly because I struggle sharpening the tips on clip points).

I might need a Water Buffalo 501 too I think I'm developing a new addiction!

Thanks to everyone for your input. This forum is very enjoyable to peruse for great info and I really like seeing all of the pictures of the great Bucks you folks have!

S SoDak81 I like the 501, carried a 501 for many years when I taught in an elementary school. This was, of course, before weapons curse. I went from the 110, to the 501 then a 503. The 503 was the end.
That whole 500 series looks so dang classy. I'd like to have them all!
