I think the question is really survive what? Polar, Amazon jungle, Rocky Mt. wilderness, African desert, or bad night on a Chicago street? No one right answer.

More a SHTF type of thing. I think it's more realistic to be a blade for Urban stuff. But at the same time it needs to be good for fire building, shelter building, etc. i don't think I need a huge blade, something I can keep in a car or two day pack.

interestingly enough though,
the USAF has kept it's pilot's survival knife at the same dimension for the longest time.
granted it's but one item suited to encompass the likes of an entire downed pilot's survival system, awaiting extraction...
personally, a sak or plier multitool makes a great option.
for years i adored the simplicity of cold steel's bushman.
and it's a working tool anyone can't afford not to have.
