Direware Solo V4 vs Medford Praetorian Ti

jaxx, i don't think you have much to worry about, most of the fine folks on this forum would have to run to their safe, decide which edge geometry and steel to use, make sure the blade was centered, open and close it a dozen times to make sure the action is still smooth, and finally, evaluate sharpness by using a magazine to reflect the mirrored edge applied by a contraption. By the time all that happens you could have slipped away to enjoy a cold one. ;)

lmao!!

Whew
Your probably right. I was trying to avoid offending the mall ninjas and arm chair warriors. Opinions and egos can be huge :barf: But those safe queen/keepers. Well those guys remind me of the riders that brings his bike out when the sun shines and rides "Oh so far" to the bar then rides home to clean his bike before putting it away till the next prefect day.

I don't have either one but if I were offered my choice of the two it would be the Direware I'd take home. There are reasons why the Direware is over twice as expensive.

Made my day, thanks for the laugh.

I haven't handled a Medford yet but the Solo I fondled was so nice that the Medford would have to be superb to win this fight. I'm looking forward to eventually checking out a Medford so I can decide wether or not ill eventually get one.

Good comparison: I'd go with the Direware. I'm awaiting my confirmation from responding to the open books email. (thumbs crossed)

Two very different knives and this reminds me the debate of Beamer ("The Ultimate Driving Machine") vs. Benz ("The Best or Nothing").

The Medford would be the "ultimate cutting machine" and the Direware would be "the best or nothing". While the blade shape of the Medford is probably more usable, the Direware has more soul and stirs more emotion, as well as uses better blade materials while costing less.

Does anyone else think they'd have a higher opinion of the Medford if the standard D2 blade was replaced with something like CTS-XHP or M390? I know Greg offers S35VN if you have to have stainless, but I'm talking about one of these three as his standard blade steel. His choice of D2 does make sense in the fact that he wants something extremely tough for what is arguably one of the toughest folders around, but CTS-XHP is touted as a "stainless D2".

Don't get me wrong, I dig Greg and his company and products, and plan on picking up a Praetorian Ti one day, but just don't really dig D2.

Life is good.

I've had both and choose Medford. The Direware looks odd to me with suck a thick frame and comparatively thin blade stock (I prefer the other way around). Price wise they are near the same and Medford you can actually order from...

Well, someone who has owned both would know better than me. You make a good point about being able to order a Medford. So much so that I know where my money is going if I don't get a confirmation from Direware. Do you still have either one?

This has nothing to do with this thread, but that is by far the coolest couch I've ever seen. Straight Hollywood.

I apologize for further derailing this thread but I'm pretty sure the cushions on those couches are armored and have handles so they work like a ballistic shield. Might not be the same one but there is a company that makes em like that.

On a more relevant note...

Does anyone have a comparison pic of the two? I feel like that would really help this thread.

Direware was extremely short term. Pretty much always have at least one Medford, I'm a big fan of Greg himself - guy is hilarious in person and truly a hard worker. Toured his old shop early 2013 while in AZ on business, he stayed late just to show me around and was in no rush at all - class act.

I want both, but the Medford seems a little more in reach. the Direware is far to expensive on the secondary market. If the Direwares ever dip into my price range, I may have to give one a shot.

I have nothing constructive to add to this thread. But this post deserved some applause. hilarious!

Could someone explain why the Medford knives, specifically the folders like Praetorian, are so expensive? The concept of the Medford folders seem to be beefy and basic - beefy blade (Some with no finish.) in a beefy folder. Are they production knives or handmade? Either way, they sell them at most major knife sites, so I assume that they are efficient at making them. So, why are they so expensive?
