dirty blades

What we're all sort of gravitating toward is exactly what Mr. Cutter said. Most gunk, including tape residues, are petroleum-based. Two products work well: strong polar orgainic solvets such as Xylene, alcohol, and mineral spirits, or another oil such as WD-40, Break Free, or plain old vegetable oil.

Tuff Cloth / Tuff Glide work because their carrier is mineral spirits, so it's the mineral spirits that are doing the job for you.

In past tests which have been published here on bf.c, it is very clear that any even moderate rubbing will remove the protective coating left by Tuff Cloth/Glide. Basically, it needs to be reapplied everytime you use the knife and even more so if you have to clean it.

i do what stich does
after using my knife to eat i just lick it, wipe it clean and strop it on my pants a little before keeping it :)

Lick both sides of the blade, pinch it firmly between your tee shirt and pull briskly. Repeat as necessary, then strop it on your jeans.

I think we grew up in the same neighborhood...

zippo fluid

Wanna save a buck or two? Naptha, that's what zippo lighter fluid is. You can get a quart can at the hardware store for what you pay for a large bottle, (1/2 pint) of zippo lighter fluid.

You can use it to remove wax buildup on furniture too, and it wont leave an oily residue like mineral spirits will.

please do this outside though!

You can not beat the good old eucy oil - will remove anything sticky such as tape residue, price sticker residue, chewing gum etc. I also use a mixture of 25% eucy oil and 75% machine oil as an everyday oil for my blades and a mixute of 50% eucy oil and 50% metho when I want a bit of penetration to clean the gunk out of tight spots.

Eucy oil is good in your wash as an insect repellent for aches and pains for insect bites and as an antiseptic. Also good for colds etc. The best oil in the world comes from right outside of our town.
