Hey guys I got some ATS34 blades back from HT and I was trying to clean out the golden rust color in the makers mark. I tried a tooth pick and sand paper but it didn't work its too small. I just don't like the way it looks when you look at the mark closely, it looks like rust. How do you guys take care of this? Thanks again.

I vibratory tumble it before my final finish. The grit usually finds its way in there and removes the heat color.

Heh, when I first read the thread title I was thinking something along the lines of porn names...:foot:

Depending on what grit of media you use for tumbling you can get some scratches out but I would not use it to get out 50 grit scratches. Sometimes I give the blades a tumble before HT to get rid of 1000grit scratches. I mainly use plain ceramic media, different sizes. I have 1.5mm, 3mm, and 3/8 in cylinders all mixed together.

Yeah, what Gixxer said.

It will get out 400 grit scratches, deburr, round edges a hair and create certain kinds of finishes. I use it for many reasons, but removing heat color is one of them, and it gets it out of my mark pretty well. I'm not saying it is the way to get color out of your mark, but it does it for me.

How about doing your mark AFTER heat treat?
You could also cold blue it and sand over it.

You can also clean well with acetone and a tooth brush then fill brush in colored epoxy. Once fully set, just sand down flush.

Great Ideas guys. I think the only one I am capable of doing right now is the colored epoxy. Thanks for the advise.

You might try a small brush and a polishing compound...
I usually etch my mark, so I've never tried it, but theoretically is should work (might take some time though).

If i have gunk in my mark i lightley bead blast it and then blue the mark to darken the letters.

Use etching solution sparingly on the mark, then polish the blade.

I made a knife for killing chickens and called it the Cantrell Cock Chopper. Everybody said that was too dirty a name. ;):D

Panch0 there for a minute I thought you were going to make a knife called "Hijo de la gran puta"

Soory I had a '70's Clint Eastwood flashback. HEHE

Pancho, I stamp my blades. To remove the straw color from my stamp, after heat treat I work a drop of Ferric into my stamp with a toothpic for a few seconds. This etches the steel black and makes my mark stand out more. Neutralise with windex and hand finish as normal.

Just a small point, but this is ATS-34 and doesn't etch the same way as standard carbon steels.

Peter Del Raso makes most of his knives out of ATS 34 so he will know if it workes or not.I have used ferric cloride on stainless to give it a finish a little like a sandblasted look, so it will etch stainless, just use a stronger mix.

Right, I mix a 1:1 ratio and it gives it a medium to dark gray finish.
