I've been using ImageShack to post pics and just noticed a lot of them are disappearing a few days later. Can anyone suggest a more reliable image hosting service?

I have had the same problem with Imageshack. They are more hassle than they're worth. +1 on Photobucket!

Never had a problem with Photobucket, but one thing: when you sign up for a Photobucket account, DO NOT give them your cell phone number when they ask for it! That isn't required, though it looks like it is, and it's something from one of their partners or somesuch, and could wind up messing with your cell service/bill. I was warned elsewhere about this. That's the only caveat I'd mention with them.

Whether you go with photobucket or imageshack, you are likely to encounter the same problem: Free=no accountability.

The way to solve this issue, the way to get reliable service, is to pay for it.

True, for truly reliable service and the ability to call someone if your pictures disappear, you have to pay money. But to simply host pictures and not worry about it, and not worry about an extra cost just so folks on a forum can see your gear shots and the like, Photobucket is the way to go. I've never, in my 4-5 years of using their service, had an image go down or had any other problems whatsoever. They have multiple options for uploading, and the option to make your account private if you so wish, so other users can't rip off your images.

As far as paid services go, though, I believe it's SmugMug I've heard good things about. I would use my own (paid) web hosting before I would do that, though. Just 'cause it's already paid for, and has plenty of space...

I use Fotki. I pay a yearly fee. They never disappear.
