Disappointed in my new SP-10!!!

I finally got to try out my Ontario SP-10 while camping this weekend. I did some batoning with it, and truth be told, it handled everything I threw at it with ease! Problem being, I noticed the finger guard developed a nasty rattle, and is pretty loose.
I plan on shipping it back tomorrow for a refund, and I'm torn, should I replace it with another SP-10, which I really like the shape and design of. I'm strongly considering an Ontario SP-8 survival machete instead. Wood processing will be it's primary (probably only) task batoning to be specific.
I've considered a BK-9, and an Ontario SP-50 genII, but I think for the money it's a SP-10 or 8. I'd love some suggestions; I'd like to keep it under $80, and made in the U.S.
Thanks in advance.

I too own the SP10. I have beat the hell out of the knife and have not had any problems. I say give it another chance.

Thanks for the encouragement! I did some research before I bought it, I couldn't find anyone who experienced a mechanical failure of their SP-10, I suppose I'm just lucky that way.

I had a freak occurrence with a Ka-Bar Large Bowie. It split from spine to edge. I gave Ka_Bar another chance and I am glad I did. Knives and cars, with so many knives being produced I figure you can get a lemon every so often.

I own both the SP8 & SP10. I have cut, chopped, batoned them both through hardwood, with no issues. I love them both. If i HAD to choose between them for camp duty & splitting/batoning, I would have to go with the SP8. I love the fact that you can choke-up on the blade with 2 fingers instead of 1, i know it is not really a choil, but it works awesome for one. DO NOT expect the top "saw serrations" to be anything more than HD jimping (& it faces the wrong way, IMHO), but it works. Mine is scary sharp for a 1/4" thick blade.

When i first got it, i had doubts that the needle point tip would hold up, but when I batoned it, i purposely hit it on the very end/tip of the SP10. It has held up wonderfully. Call KaBar/Ontario & send it back, they will make it right i'm sure. I LOVE Ontario knives, they make the Beckers as well.

Ontario doesn't make Becker?? And it's not a part of Kabar at all. Ontario and Kabar are two different companies.

The SP10 is a beast of a knife. Probably a fluke, as I've not heard any issues like that before.
