Disappointed in one of my oldest friends

The last year or so I've reached a point of not caring what the herds think. All my EDCs are legal, and I've got a spotless record(not even a parking ticket).

{sometimes I wonder what I've wasted my life doing if I'm 20 and still innocent}

Have a guy at work that is scared shitless of me because of how much weight I can toss around(I'm down to 170lbs now and move the 350lbs rolls), and everytime he sees me moving more than my weight he complains about my knives to the boss. Figures he can get me canned because of that. The boss has liked me since day 1, been there over a year without any official complaints(paperwork).

When I'm out and about, I have no concerns about using my 3-4" edc's to open stuff. More often than not around here ppl want to look at it. But this is an area thats heavy in farmers. Been carrying since my 5th bday.

Chickenfried, your post has a more elemental theme that goes beyond knives as well. I've noticed that I have become disapointed with a few frinds over the years. I have no judgement on their settling into domesticity, career and children - they are as valid a choice as any. But what saddens me is their loss of free thought and originality. They become security seeking and conservative. They believe whatever the nightly news tells them, without questioning and they become reactive to anything a bit wild and dangerous. They get this authoritative tone in their voices that discourages any challenge to their increasingly solidifying world view. They just aren't fun anymore.

I've mourned the loss of a few friends to the vanilla existence over the last 20 years........

You may not be guilty but I bet you're not innocent, either! :D

I think that's the basic, underlying problem. They want to enjoy the security they've worked so hard to achieve, but they mistakenly equate stasis with security, and refuse to allow any more adventure into their outlook on life.

I have this problem in a major way.

I've found ways to use people's perceptions against them; sure it compromises my ability to carry what I want but I have found a 5 piece setup that meets a lot of practical needs, isn't very expensive, and covers a lot of ground.

RFP: Sypderco Dodo. A knife made to appeal to the knut in you and and if you get one with the blue handles it looks very nonthreatening to the non initiated. Cuts like a chainsaw.

LFP: All Steel Spyderco Cricket. A backup knife/loaner/palm knife. Take this out when someone asks to borrow a knife or you can conceivably conceal the knife in your hand and still do the job.

RHP: SOG Powerlock with Gold TiNi coating. The gold color and the easily recongnized "tool" shape eliminate most people's reactions to a large chunk of silver steel.

LHP: Victorinox Cybertool: Just got it and use it like crazy. I got it with translucent blue scales. The easily recognized SAK logo and format put people at ease, and the color help explains the blue handled Dodo. (People assume they're a "tool set".)

Keychain: What I have to wear kind of eliminates neck carry, so I put my Hideaway Straight on my keys. When walking around outside I simply walk with my keys in my hand and the knife is invisible.

Some people may criticize me for "pussing out", but the fact is I work in a very sensitive environment and little things like this can get me fired. And the fact is my work is very important to me even if a lot of people in my field are afraid of tools. At least this way I am well prepared for a lot of things that can and do come up every day.

Everything I carry is justifiable. The Cricket I call a pocketknife which doesn't bother anyone. The Dodo is a utility knife if anyone asks. The Cybertool is for fixing electronics and the Powerlock is too. The Hideaway is a hands free DVD case tape removal tool. It's a very real issue to be able to justify it all if asked.

It has taken some getting used to. This is a whole new EDC setup for me but I am liking it so far.

DeadManWalking, you don't have to apologize for that EDC set-up. You've got a few really fine tools there. And you're carrying five knives!

I only have one point of disagreement. I wouldn't let anyone borrow my SS Cricket. Too nice a knife to hand to anyone too ignorant to carry one of his own :D

Been using them for close to 10 years now...

Picked up my last FRN Delica 50 /50 AUS-8 at a 'junk' store for $2...cash, USD

For $2, with a little 204 touch-up, I did well... :D

Mel, collector of $xxxx 'collecting' knives, user of $2 'using' knives... ;)

DeadMan> only 5?

Right: BM921s(combo), LM Juice s2, Spydie Bone Kiwi
Right hip: Custom LHK Skean Dhu(full to specs, one off)
Left hip: LM Crunch(serrated)

Neck: Spydie ss pe 'fly in an OS/T rig(24/7 carry)

and in my gear bag is my Spydie s60v ce Military.
car has a cheap multi and a slipjoint in the glovebox.

Esav: In the eyes of the law, they haven't caught me doing anything, yet. The only thing I do is speed when I can get away with it(My dad is a courier, and taught me what areas are good, drove with him for over 2yrs)... and public drunken-ness, but thats going the 2km from the bar to my buddy's. In the sense of morals: haven't been laid yet, quit smoking, and unless I owe something or have been given reason to have shared trust, I'll just as readily stab you in the back and turn you over to the highest bidder. Between insomnia(2-3hrs a night, if I sleep, have gone 3-4 days without any before) and 2 serious attempts on my life (in 2 years by the same kid, his father(a cop) put a restaining order on his own son after my chat with him, prefers him alive), insanity is but a step away. I've already made a foray into that side once. Gotta love my life.
